I'ALMEUSrON NORTH, May 5. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Angus M'Donald, a. farmer, war, charged with attempted suicide. 'J'iin accused got into monetary difficulties, and about tlio middlo of March disappeared from home. All trace of him was lost till March 31, when he was found at Sandon in a semi-con-scious stato and bleeding dangerously from a self-inllictcd wound. Taking the circumstanecs into consideration, ihe S.M. admitted the accused to probation, but stated that it would have boen moro manly for him to sec his trouble out than atteir.pt self-destruction, especially since accused had a wife and children dependent iij.on llim.

STRATFORD, May 5. At the Police Court this morning Bernard William Irwin, a young man, was charged with (ho robbery of jewellery and money on Easter Monday to the vaiuo of £20, and was remanded for a week. At tho time of the robbery accused was managing a shop next door to where the rob-

bery was committed, and he informed tho police that he also ,had been robbed. Mostof the missing pro|>erty was found among accused's effects, and ho made a full confession to tho police.

WELLINGTON, May 6. Four seamen were arrested yesterday on the ship Cassius, from Liverpool, charged with disobeying (lie commands of the captajn; also with broaching cargo. G. Albright, chief mate, is under arrest on' a charge of cargo broaching.

CHRIS'fCIIURCII, May 5. Joseph Brown was committed for trial to-day on a charge of stabbing Walter J. Ray, licensee of the Railway Hotel, on May 3. ■ Ray was stabbed on tho chin, and received a cut on tho web of the thumb 2£in long.

OAMARU, May 5. Harry Waller Worley, a young man, who had beep driving a cart for some timo for Mr Davjd Dunn, butclicr, was arrested last night by Detective Filzgorald on a charge of embezzling £330 of his employer's money. Ho was brought boforo the court this morning and remanded on bail till Friday.
