The May number of tho Bed Funnel will bo found to realise expectations a 9 an interesting compilation of varied reading matter, the number being, in fact, one of the best that has come uildei our notice. Avery able article on "Government Ownership of ltailwavs," by !(c\v Zealand'.! Minister of Hallways (Sir Joseph Ward), occupies pride of place, and a largo subject will be found very lucidly nnd tersely handled. New Zealand by no means bulking too largely therein. In " The Fragments of a Lost Continent" Mr M. Frascr gives a most readable, account of a trip in the Government steamer lfinemoa in search of castaways, while of special interest to Dunedinites mill lie found thi article entitled " Sewerage and Drainage Works iii Dunedin,' 1 by Mr J. 'J'. A'oble Anderson, engineer-in-chief to the Sunedin Drainage Board. Interesting photographic illustrations accompany both the articles last mentioned, nnd in the latter some street scenes very familiar to Duiiedinites of late are depicted. " The Boston Hupid Transit Subways " is the title under which Mr William Lincoln Biilch deals with the development of the subterranean remedy for surface congestion in the first city to seek it in ihe United States. Miss Ciriiushaw continues her account of a tour through Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, and the very admirable matter appearing under " Eijitonp.l" adds to the strength of the magazine as far as tho instructive nature of its contents is concerned, and the proportion of this, it will bo admitted, is for popular journal considerable. Tho lighter side ol literature is, however, well represented also Ethel Turner's serial, "In the Mist of the Mountains," continues, and is supplemented bv quite a number of minor stories nnd sketches.

Messrs Skene ami Fleming, seed and plant merchant?, Dunedin, have issued an . illustrated catalogue and prico list. A number of specialties in tubers, vegetables, and flowers are described, and the characteristics of most of tho seeds and plants are given brietlv, so that the purchaser is in a position to divide whether the article he buys meets his requirement?. The catalogue is nicely got up.
