The annual meeting of the Wanganui Draughts Association was held 011 April 9 in the T.Y.M.I. rooms, a large number of members being present. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr "W. Armstrong (reelected); vice-presidents, Mr M'Cosh (reelected), Mr J. Soier, Mr A, K, Harris (reelected), Mr C. Bridges (re-elected); secretary and treasurer. Mr Smidt (re-elected). The president presented the Championship Shield to the captain of the Wanganui Draughts Club, and in a happy speech complimented the winners 011 their great victory. Mr ,7. li. Murray suitably replied 011 bdialf of his club, and spoke some words of encouragement to (he losing teams. The presentation of the championship medals was then proceeded with, Mr J. B. Murray receiving the senior championship medal. Mr P. Keegan (lie junior championship, ami Mr S. Phillips the third class championship. The Wanganui Club having won the shield outright, the question o[ providing another one was discussed, and, to show how enthusiastically the members present entered into the question it may he mentioned that a subscription list opened in the room rt■sulted in the sum of i's 15s (id being received. Any draughts players who feel inclined to help are invited to do so; subscriptions may be paid to the secretary (Mr J. Smidt) or to the different club captains. If was decided to invite the local jewellers to supply drawings and prices for a. suitable shield. The closing of entries for the .Shield matches was fixed for May 1, I9OG.

A special vole of (hanks was accorded (0 the press for the way it had reported tho meetings and matches during the year., Mr .f. Smidt received a hearty' vote of thanks for his services during the* last twn years. A vote of thanks was also passed to the 'J'A.M.I. Ciub for the use of their room for the meetings during the year. The question of having the association's rules printed was left in the hands of the secretary to report at the next meeting. The following is the substance of the third annual report read and adopted at the above meeting: —

ilie season jusl passed lias boon a success ill every way. There were six clubs affiliated during the year, and the high standard of play has been maintained. Six teams entered for the Shield matches, and some very exciting matches and close finishes were witnessed. The Wanganui Draughts Club again came out on top, winning nil its matches, with the T.Y.M.I. Club again in second place. These two clubs always make a- great tight for first place, the T.Y.M.I. being the ninnersul> tor three years. The positions of the teams at the finish were a?, follow:—AYanganui, 10 wins; T.Y.M.I, I, 8 wins, 2 lost; Aramoho, 4 wins. 4 lost, 1 drawn; Kastown, !1 wins, (J lost; Cosmopolitan, 2 wins, 7 lost 1 drawn; T.Y.M.I. 11, 1 win, !) lost. As this is tho third year in succession that the Wanganui Draughts Club has won the Shield contest, the trophy now becomes its propertv. I would suggest that .subscriptions be raised amongst the draughts players of tho district towards procuring another shield, and that the trophy be competed for annually, but should remain the property of the association, instead of being won outright a* in the past. The committee decided to hold three championships this year—senior, junior, and third class, and its decision was well rewarded by the record number of entries received—namely, eight in tho senior, ten in the junior, and fourteen in the third-class. Mr 3. Anderson was appointed classifier, and he is to be congratulated on the way he did his work, as there were no complaints amongst !he competitors. It is a matter for regret that there were so many forfeits during the matches. This is accounted for, no doubt" by the general elections taking place at the time. The Senior Championship was won this year by Mr J, B. Murray, who went through the contest without the loss of a life, Mr W. H. Smith filling second place. Tho Junior Championship fell to Mr I'. Iveegnn, who also came through without mishap, Mr E. J. Williams securing second place. The Third Class Championship was won by Mr S. Phillips. Mr J. Anderson suffered a great loss during the year through the death of his beloved wife. A letter of condolence was sent to 'him by the association, also an artificial wreath as a mark of esteem in which ho is held by 'his fellow draughts players. The finances of the association are in ji very healthy state, tho balance sheet showing a credit baiance on the year's work of £1 17s.—J. Smidt, Hon. Sec. DRAUGHTS ITEMS. Town v. Country.— As a reminder to country representatives we append the names of thoso appointed at the last annual gathering: — Country—Captain. Mr Janie3 Gardiner (Oamaru); deputy-captain, Mr D. Bower (Waiwera); organisers for their respective districts—Messrs A. Murdoch (Riversdale). W. Marsh (Wyndham), M. Lcith (Wood'ands), A\. Kobertson (Palmerston). Duncan (Ranfurlv), \Y. World.—The March issue of the evergreen" is promptly to hand as usuai. All its customary features are retained, everv page containing something'good. The bio" graphical department is devoted to a sketch of the career of Mr T. G. Blundell, president of the famous London Wanderers Club. The whole number constitutes another tribute to the invariable care and good taste of the publishers, Messrs A. Bryson and Co., 92 Trongate, Glasgow. Price 4s 6d per annum. Mr Frank Dunne gave a display of simultaneous draughts playing recently at Liverpool, under tho auspices of the Liverpool Draughts Chili, conducting games on fifteen boards at once, against a strong team of Liverpool and Birkenhead players. Tho last \ game was finished just under two hours, the score at the conclusion being 8 wins to Mr Dunne, 2 losses, and 5 draws, I A match for a smali stake was recently played between F. F. Smith (ex-champion of Birmingham), and Mr G. Johnson (champion of \\ alsall). The match was one of ten games, and after a hard fight resulted in a win for the Walsall champion by 3 games to 2 games, and 4 games drawn. The last game was not played, as even in the event- of Mr Smith equalising, the match, according to tho conditions, would have been awarded to Mr Johnson. A match for the draughts championship of Malta has been contested between Mr Hugh Jl'Manus, champion of Malta, and Mr H. Derrick, champion of the Fleet, and resulted in a win for Mr M'Manus with the score of; i wins to 2 wins.
