{Per United Press Absocutioh.) AUCKLAND, March 15. At to-night's meeting of the Auckland City Council Mr Walter E. Bush was chosen from 120 applicants for the post of city engineer. Mr Bush possesses high credentials, and was formerly borough water engineer at Sudbury, Suffolk. The Hon. G. H. Mills "was waited on today by a deputation interested in tho Island fruit trade, and, after hearing the views of the deputation, embracing several suggested improvements, promised to go carefully into tho whole matter, BLENHEIM, March 15. The criminal session of the Supremo Court was opened to-day, before Mr Justice Denniston. Thore was only ono criminal case—that in which a seaman off the schooner Ronga, named Bcaman, was charged with slabbing another seaman at Havelock. A verdict of not guilty was returned. The judge congratulated the district on tho lightness of the calendar. HOKITIKA, March 15. The Hokitika Borough Council has entered into an agreement, with Mr Leslie H. Reynolds, C.E., to provide an efficient water-supply scheme for the borough. INVERCARGILL, March 15. A serious complaint was made at the borough council to-night of lax inspection of meat at the abai loirs. The opinion was generally expressed that' the inspection would never be satisfactory while tho Government inspector was not under somo control by tho borough council. A councillor'paid a surprise visit, and declared ho found the inspector absent while meat was being killed and the stamp lying open on a desk. The condition of the buildings was said to be most unsatisfactory
