SHIPPING TRADE AWARD.
DISSATISFACTION AMONG WORKERS. DECISION OF THE SEAMEN'S UNION. The award of tho Arbitration Court in the dispute between the Seamen's Union and the shipowners, us published in our columns yesterday, hits not been well received by (lie workers, as will be seen by the following resolutions passed last evening:— THE SEAMEN'S UNION. The following resolution was unanimously endorsed at the general meeting of tho Seamen's Union last night: — "That this meeting expresses its astonishment at the terms of the award of the Arbitration Court in the ease of the Seamen's Union v. tho Union S.S. Co. and other shipowners, and is emphatically of opinion that the decision of tho court has not the slightest relation to that justice which we have been led to expect from a judicial tribunal. In view of the obvious impossibility of securing an award based on' the. weight, of evidence adduced, we consider it useless to spend further time and money in Arbitration Court proceeding;." OTAGO TIiADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL. The following resolution was carried without dissent, at last night's mcciing of the Otago Trades and Labour Council: — That this council notes with regretthat. the Arbitration Court so often seemingly ignores the evidence placed before if, and frames its awards totally at variance with llieir evidence, (lie latest example being the Seamen's Union dispute ; and. further, that the council specially deplores the refusal of the court to grant preference, in fuco of tho fact that over AO per cent, of seamen are members, and that this council extends its sympathy to the union for the unsatisfactory award given in face of tho strong evidence placed before the court in tho union's favour."
