Tho latest novelty in marine transport is Ihe projected voyage of the Dowe.v, a floating dry dock, from Chesapeake Bay lo Manila, a distance of 14,000 miles, via (lie Suez Canal. A tug master at Norfolk, Virginia, has just signed a contract, for this remarkable cruise. Reports are published at. Antwerp which, if true, may forbade disaster for Antwerp's prosperity as a great port. The river passage to the harbour is growing so shallow near the northern Dutch bank that large vessels are afraid to traverse it by night, for fear of grounding. The Dutch Government refuses to allow the Belgians to clear away the growing shoals. Advices from St. John's (N.F.) report the arrival there of the steamer Stella Maris, which was formerly the British . gunboat Starling, condemned undi'r the naval reorganisation scheme last year. She has been equipped with powerful'wrecking apparatus, and will be maintained for service along the Newfoundland coast, under ownership of a local syndicate, managed by Captain Alfred Mauley. The company has also purchased the* former gunboat Bounce, which will bo used as a tug in connection with the work o( tho Stella Maris. A CLEVER INVENTION. Attention lias been recently called in London to a clever invention for petting at a ship's bollom when at sea. It consists of a cylinder made of prepared canvas, about 2ft in diameter and long enough 10 reach the keel.' Near the liottom of ihc cylinder there is a glass window and two sleeves. The operator puts bis arms through these sleeves, and is able to work with his hands free. The cylinder is lowered over the side, and hauled close into the ship by means of a ropo passing under the keel. The top of the pipe above water is lcfl open for (lie purpose ol air. The inventor, Captain Livingstone, made his lirsr. attempt with the apparatus when mastei of the barque Birnam Wood. This vessel, on December 5, 1904, while 011 a voyage from Bunbury, West Australia. to London, developed n serious leak about 12f: under water, which became so bad fhat only liy'the conlimted use of hand pumps and a windmill pump could the vessel be kepi afloat. Captain Livingstone then made a canvas cylinder, using cask hoops to keep off ibo waler pressure, and was able to strip oIF several sheets of copper, stop the leak, which was an open butt, and caulk several bulls in oilier parts and replace the copper. The work under wafer occupied about seven hours. The vessel was 147 days at sea after this, and although she eucounlered very bad weather oil the Capo of Good Hope arrived at London perfectly iight. without the pumps being touched the whole of the time. The captain claims thai wilh Iwo of these pipes, which have been much improved, and two competent men a steamer's propeller, could be shipped at sea. The whole thing shuls up like a concertina, and can be stowed in a. harness cask. TIIK AUSTRALASIAN SQUADRON. An intimation lias bren received by the Federal Defence Department that, the Admiralty is willing to replace Ihe Powerful by the Monmouth as tlagshin of the Australian squadron. This ha? arisen in con-cquence' of a report made by Captain Cresswell, naval director, when the Powerful arrived in Australia. In that report lie contrasted the Powerful with the Huryalus. very much to the disadvantage of the former, and Ministers, after consideration, sent the criticism 011 lo tire Admiralty. The Admiralty, in reply, slated lh.it the Powerful was probably more serviceable, and the bettor "fighting ship of the two. They are agreeable, however, to send out lh& armoured cruiser Monmouth if desired, and there the matter rests at present. 'The .Monmouth is one of the county class of armoured cruisers, A comparison with the Powerful, the present, flagship, and the Euryalus, the fate flagship, is obtained from the following table: — Monmouth, Foraraii, | Eubyaiub. , Displaeunent. 9800 tons j 14,40) tons | 15,000 tons Horsepower. 22,000 | 2fi,000 | 21,000 Speed. 23 knots J 22 knots | 2! knots Armour.
