THE WRECK OF THE ALLIANCE.

The barque Alliance, which is reported to have gone ashore at Callao. is wellknown in Now ports. She arrived at Auckland on May 16 last with a general cargo from Liverpool, and after discharging went to Newcastle ami loaded 1500 tons of coal for Callao, for which port she sailed on August 27 last, so that she must have gone ashore very soon after arrival at the South American noi't. The Alliance is an iron barque of 993 tons gross, and 997 tons net resistor, her dimensions boine—lonetli 202 ft, beam 34ft lin. dentil of bold 20ft 6in. Sim was built in 1885 at Liverpool by Messrs K. anil J. Evans and Company, and was owned by the Alliance Shin Co., Ltd. (J. S. Evans, manager). Captain James is in command of the vessel, having succccded Captain Porter a fow months ago.

LOSS OF A BRITISH-INDIA LINER, Calcutta papers by the mail contain particulars of the loss of the 8.1.5. N. Company's steamer Bihara. While on r. voyage from Calcutta to Rangoon the vessel ran into a dense fog. She proceeded slowly, but suddenly stuck hard and fast on the Algundo Reef. Tho stranding occurred at 10 o'clocl; in tho morning. There was considerable troublo with the native passengers, and a,Dame was only averted by the coolness of the officers. For three days the Bihara remained on the reef, a number nf passengers being si ill on board, Towards tho end of the second dav water found its way into the forepart of the vessel, and she began to siiow signs of breaking up. Fortunately she continued intact until August 30. when the 8.1. steamer Rasbara hove in sight, bound to Rangoon. Iler appearance was timely, and all hands on board the stranded steamer were rescued. Not long after this the Bihara broke her back, and the afterpart went down in deep water. The Bihara was a vessel of 5543 tons.
