Farquhar, AVarepa, wrote ro closing road through sootions 19 and 19a, Carterhopo Estate, and stated that he was prepared to purchase the closed road if tlio council were inclined to sell.—The Chairman explained that this ffaa held over from last meeting for tho member for the riding (Cr Ayson) to interview the parties interested.—The fanners also interested—namely, John Christie, H. Knowlcs, D. It. Jack, and T. Riddoll \vrots asking that the road be dosed.—"Cr Ayson said that ha had seen all the parties except Mr T. Telford, who held a suction adjoining tho road. He moved that stcp3 hi taken to close the road.—The resolution, ou being put, was carried unanimously. Tha Undc-r-secrelary for Public AYorks wrote to •the construction of the Cabins-Sea-ward Bush railway, and stated that ill consequence- of its construction, certain roads in tho county wero diverted, and in order to place these divisions legally under the control of the council ail Order-in-Coimcil had been issued chelating such diversions to bo county roads. Copies of order and plans were enclosed.—Letter received. C. AV. Hursthotise, Chief Engineer Department of Roads, wrote re Pomaha-ka. bridge- at Conical Hills and the application .of a-' grant towards same, that the same would receivo consideration when tho Estimates wofe being' compiled.—Received. He also wroto iu similar terras ro the grants asked for tho Clinton-Poraahaka. and Clinton-Owaka. roads, and bridge over AYaiwera on Cliriton-Piienia road,—Received. The Undersecretary Department of Lands an<J Survey wrote re Port Slolyneux Public Cemetery and the appointment of Mr Andrew Miteholl AA'ylie as a trustee in place of Mr Jame3 Steven (resigned). The Under-secre-tary notified the council that tho power of appointing trustees to the cemetery waa delegated to the Ciut-ha County Council on July 14, 1837. If the council wished to have, its powers revoked, information as to the. names and addresses of the present members oi the Port Molyneux Cemetery should be furnished.—The Chairman said it would be as well to bring all the cemeteries' trustees undsr the same authority. Tho Port Molyneux Cemetery seemed to bo the only one under 'the control of the council.—The matter was. left in the bands of Hie chairman and clerk to inquire into and take what action they deemed advisable. D. Barren, Chiof Surveyor Distrirct. Lands Office, Dunedin, wrote ro liis department's charges for examining certain plans, and could, not see his way to exempt tho council from payment of same.—lt wa3 agreed to pay the amount—namely, 15s 3d. The Treasury notified that- the sum of £309, being payment of subsidy unite " The Local. Bodies Finance and Powers' Act, 1855," etc., had 1>6611 laid into the bank.—Received.. The Colonial Secretary's Oflico wrote requesting information. as to local bodies that have taken advantage of the increased rating powers conferred "by "Tho Counties Act Amendment Act, 1903," etc.—Received. ■ . ■ J. K. Logan, Superintendent of Electric Lines, wrote;- re the erection of the , -Kaihiku telephone, that tho matter was under consideration.—Received. A communication from the Charitable Aid Board was received showing, amounts being contributed to deserving cases in the district.—Cγ Xicol said there -was a reduction in one case, and it was resolved to write and ask that tha amount be increased to tha original amount. It might be m well to defer consideration till next meeting, when Mr Wills might 'bo able to give them some further information on the subject.—The snggestion was adopted. ' ■ ' Dγ V. Sydney Goldsmith, Honeysuckle Lodge, Pusrua, v?roto re the valuations on his property, which had been increased by £190. He complained that notice of the increase )jnd not been sent him in time to appeal—The clerk was instructed to inform Mr Goldsmith thst the council did not make the valuations. Andrew Lees, Owaki, wrote ro creek at section 28, block IX, Glenomaru, being impeded, and on behalf of Iho owners asked that the original flow of the stream be resiorcd.Lett with engineer to attend to. Wareua, wrote re accident which occurred to him when driving, being tipsst by a load of stones being tipped up on tho wheel mark. He claimed £3 dsinagcs.-Cr Nicol said the heap of stones was over the ..wheal niark9 and lie thought the council wns liable. -The Engineer said tbe fault wss the fault of the .'carter. It waa agreed to pay tin amount, on the motion of Cr Nicol. Tho Treasury wrote, re loan of £3500 for worke in Richardson Biding, that tho samo had been provisionally approved of.—lt was resolved that tho necessary formalities Iμ taken to secure the loan. The Clinton Town Board wrote stating that the subsidy promised for forming water channel on Clinton-Tapanui road had not yet been paid.—On looking at tho records, it was shown that only the- ccat of channelling was to be subsidised, and also it was to be dono to the, satisfaction of tbe engineer.—The Engineer* said he had intimated to tho Town Board that he was not prepared to certify the work had been satisfoctorilv performed.—Eesolved that the cnginew and Crs Hay, Nicol, and M'Lachlan visit the place aud inquire into , the circumstances. James Cooper, Katanui, wrote re pelting assistance on behalf of the Upper Catl.ins settlers to get a road line cleared and overhanging trees felled on the north side of the road. The settlers wero prepared to assist, £>nd asked for a visit from tho engineer, when tlio worst places would - be. pointed out.— Engineer to report. C. J. Wood, Balclutba, applied for the use of one of the pipe moulds to wsko e. roller for a bowling green which Mr G. Smith, sen., was now making at Kska Point.—The.request was granted. Walker Johnston) reported as follows for period ended August 2G:—"Tho priucipal works dono during the month beyond a ditcinuhed quantity of surfacing have been a? follows:—By day labour: Maintenance molol for Cwaka, and Wnikawa Main reads, maintenance metal for Shaw's track aud Port road (Richardson); maintenance mefal for Warcp. I examined the block roads in connection with the applications of Mrs Grant and otliMs for a new road through Morton's and Sonicrvillo's. I find from information supplied by tho Survey Department that- steps wero taken to clos; these- roads in 1805, but that tho otep3 taken worn nevra completed, and tho roads are still open. The distance by tlm block roads is two and a-quarter mi!cs, ar.d by the pioposed new road lg miles.
