CASUALTIES.

A man named James Goodall, a. ganger, aged 63, dic-d suddenly at Tahafcopa on Saturday night. A mcdioal man who athim about five days ago expressed i the opinion that death was due to internal ' ailments. Deceased was a single man, and, . as far as is known, had no relatives in the colony.

- F. Fipdlator, of tho crew of H.M.S. Challenger, who was injured on tho railway at Port Chalmers on Saturday nhrht, and had , his leg amputated in tho Hospital, was at latest inquiry progressing very well. Tito operation was- performed, as usual, by ono of the honorary 6taff of tho Hospital.

The Mataura Ensign states that ,Miss Eupheram Hannay, an old lady, who had resided at Mr .Tames Smith's, Talleyfield Waikaka Valley, since 18T7, was 'Badly burned about tho lower limbs on Wednesday evening in putting out a fire. Miss Hannay, who was in her ninty-sixth >W, after'putting out tho fire, went outside and called out, Mr Smith's family going quickly to her assistance, and medical aid pcing obtained. Tho poor , old lady, however, succumbed to tho shock on Friday. Jtiss Hannay was bora in Kirkcudbright in, 1810, and camo to the colonies with her brother (David Hannay) in 1851, landing at Melbourne. Sho accompanied her brother to the goldficlds in that coloqy, where they encountered tho ukual _ vicissitudes of the early , days. Mr and Miss Hannay camo to Duncdin m 1865, and wcro employed by tlic lato Mr James Shaud at the Taiori. In 1877 Mr Hannay and Mr James Smith, of Talleyfield, having entered into partnership, Miss Hannay went to Waikaka Valloy, whero sho resided ever since.
