(P>eccived March 2, at 11.5 p.m.) Mv Reid, the Federal Premier, lias dccifal to issue instructions not to apply the language test to Maoris. A report on the recent case cnllcd for- by the' External Affairs De»artm?nt ;-hows that both Maoris wore asked to pass the test, in English, but did not do so. Mr Reid, in answer to tho question, "What was to he the general policy with regard to the admission of Maoris?" said: "Maoris looking for work or visu.ng Australia for other purposes may now enter without restriction. I regard them on the sam.i footing as ordinary N«w Zealand white colonists. They will, of course, have to comply with the contract labour clause the same as Englishmen." AUCKLAND. March 2. Tiw Premier h'a» received tho .following cable from !Mr Reid. tho Federal Premier, with reference to the exclusion of two Maori*:—"Strict inquiry has shown that the Maori 4 ; in (tucGtion were, both a c «ted to undergo tho test, and did not attempt to comply with it. I wish, however. to sav I have issued instructions that in future Maoris are not to bo asked to undergo any such test."
