CRICKET.

AUSTRALIA v. CHRISTCHURCH.

(l'zn United Press ABsooution.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. The match between Canterbury and the 'Australians was continued to-day in lino weather, tho wicket" being good and the attendance very large. The day produced some interesting cricket, and, although tho Australians appear to have the match well in hand, Canterbury has made an excellent showing. With 82 runs on for fivo wickets, it was anticipated that the remaining Australians would pile up a big score, as tho pick of the team were still to bat. As- it happened, however, Bennett and'Callaway, both of whom bowled splendidly, disposed of tho remainder of the team quite as cheaply, and the whole side was out for 166. There was an clement of luck in getting the last two batsmen, Duff and Geh'rs, run out, but in both eases the wickets were secured by brilliant fielding. The fielding of tho Canterbury men was capital throughout. Both Bennett and Callaway bowled with consistent merit, keeping a gcod length and sending down very few loose balls, and keeping the batsmen quiet, with the exception of Ilill, who played frbely and confidently from the moment he went to the wickets, and who looked like being set for a, score when tho end came. In their second innings Canterbury made a good start, the board showing 160 for four wickets. After Ridley's departure, however, Barron, Ellis, and Bennett went in quick successioir'without scoring and 165 showed for eight wickets. Ollivicr played the innings of the day, showing good defensivo cricket at the time it was needed, and Lawrence and Ridley ably seconded him. Orchard's was a very fluky innings. Play was resumed at 12.5, Gregory and Armstrong taking up tho Australians' innings to tho ,bowling of Callaway and Bennett. After 13 runs had been added, mostly in quick-run singles, Bennett beat Gregory all the way, clean bowling him' with a fast low ball. 95—6—10. Trumper was greeted with loud applause on joining Armstrong, and survived an appeal for legbeforo off his first ball. Tho run-getting was slow, Callaway sending down a maiden to Trumper and Bennett one to Armstrong. Off tho first ball of Callaway's next- over Boxshall missed Trumper at tho wickets, but there was a roar of applause when the very noxt ball tho wicket-keeper redeemed his mistake by snapping the champion bat smartly. 104—7—6. Hill came next, and, after a couplo of overs, was missed from an easy chance in tho clips by Callaway, tho ball coming off Boxshall's gloves. Tho left-handev then got' busy; and quickly had 20 to his credit. Fivo minutes before the lunch adjournment Bennett, who was bowling splendidly, broke through Armstrong's patient defence, clean bowling him with a ball exactly similar to the ono that beat Gregory. IM—B— 49. Armstrong had played a patient, chanceless innings, and his defence had been very sound. Duff joined Hill, who hit Callaway twieo for 4- in succeeding balls, and tho lunch adjournment was taken with the scoro at 155 for eight wickets. On resuming, after adding M runs,' Duff was easily run out, attempting a fourth run from a drive by Hill. 166—9—5. Without any addition to the scoro two balls later Gehrs in attempting a short run was smartly thrown out by Barron, and tho innings closed for 166, Hill being not out with 44. Bennett and Callaway Ijowled unchanged throughout; the innings, tho former taking fivo wiekots for 84 and tho latter three for

In a minority of 47 runs Canterbury started their second venture afc 2.30 will: Orchard and Sims. Orchard taking strike to Noble. Play was slow, and Sims .put one up dangerousl- near Laver in tho clips. Immediately afterwards Orchard gave Armstrong a hot chance in tho slips, which the Australian dropped at tho second attempt. , Orchard opened out and hit Laver twice to the boundary, bringing! 20 up, but immediately afterwards Sims was smartly taken in the slips by Armstrong. 23—1—4. Ollivier joined Orchard, who survived a con-, fident appeal for stumping. He signalised this by lifting Layer's next ball over the ropes for 6, and lived past another- universal appeal for a catch at the wickels— the very next. ball. Halt an hour's play showed. 35, of which Orchard claimed 30. He continued to hit freely, but was ultimately caught by Gehrs from a high on-drivo. 46—2—36. Orchard hit five 4's and a 6. Lawrence followed, and play grew very idow. Armstrong replaced Laver, and *2 runs camo for a-quarier of an hour's'play. Fifty showed in the. hour, and Hopkins replaced Noble. Gehrs replaced Armstrong. but a separation failed to come, and Howell replaced Hopkins, and the lea adjournment was taken with tho score at 83 for two wickcts. After resuming, runs continued to comc slowly, and Ollivier brought the century up with a singlo after two hours' play.
