BEGONIAS AND PELARGONIUMS
On ssvern.l occasions (luring the past lew years we have been pleased to record the striking success of Mr Henry Clarke, gardener to Mr E. Glenaining, of North-Boat Valley, m raising by hybridisation some dozen or more particularly fino pelargoniums, which ate now highly prised nil over the colony, In December ot 1901 the Certifying Committee ot the Dty'.cdiu Horticultural Society was again able to congratulate this enthusiast on his continued success, and to grant first-class certificates lor four new varieties raised by him:—-To Pride of the Valley (cross off Lord Roberts, pollen'from Henry Hopper); Clarke's Sim (cross off Rev. Charles Lownds, pollen from Edward Perkins); Distinction (cross pff Sir. Alfred Milner, pollen from General AYauchopr); Pakeha (cross off Miss Maggie G-lendining, pollen from Royalty). Second class certificates wove given to Captain Cargitl and Madame Mcllxi. Mr Clarke has now secured gratifying succcss with another class of flowering plants— tbej brilliant '' a-'jd showy begonias. By judicious hybridising he has during the past three years risised some charming new varieties of double begonias, for which the Certifying Committee of the Dunedin Horticultural Society granted him on. Saturday bst, February 11. eight first-class.certificates; Miss Pannv Lea (cross front Purple King and the Duchess of York) is of a deep salmon colour/ having magnificent .form and great substance; Miss May G'.cndining (Duchess of York and Countess of Craven) is of a very soft 3alipon pink of exquisite form and altogether'quite a UlNqiie double begonia; 'Sensation (Countess of Warwick and Duchess of York), cc-lcur orange scarlet; Illuminator (CounUss'of Warwick and Lady Wilmott), a very fine' deep' scarlet and a' strong grower;
Grail dec, ,salmon ■'puifc; very free flowering; Fire King, scarlet; Eva, ;doub!e white, pure camelliav form;, Jloinanoff, rose-shaded red. As begonias; keep flowering freely for weeks, the" Committee of 'the .Horticultural Society irusts- that; at its next flower show thos* of (he public who are interested will he able to see for themselves these splendid results, of Mr Clarke's efforts. .
