THE PORT CHALMMERS RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.

With refcrenoe to the suggestion that a new time-table should be drawn up for the Duncdin-Port Chalmers service, the Mayor of Port Chalmers, at last'night's meeting of the Borough Council, adduced a number of reasons why tho proposal alterations would riot bo at all suitable to residents ot Port Chalmers. His Worship said the 8.30 p.m. train from Dunedin was a very useful one, 83 it enabled Port Chalmers residents to go to Dunedin, transact business, etc., and return home early. Moreover, it was the last train from which the watermen at Port Chalmers would tako officers, passengers, etc., out to ships in the harbour. Tho 10.12 p.m. train was one of the best patronised on tho evening service, and if it were altered to 9.20 it would bo useless for a largo number who wished to attend concerts, cto., and a. lot of people would have to walk about Dunedin until 11 o'clock. Any alteration in the time of the departure of the present 10.12 train would bo a great inconvenience to the travelling public on tho line. The 11.30 train might with advantage be started a little, earlier. The proposed 7.55 p.m. train would bo use-ful for people living between Dunedin and St. I/cona-rds, as it would enable people living in the city to attend meetings, etc., "but it would arrive at Port Chalmers too late for such purposes. Port' Chalmers residents would like this train added to the service, but it would not fill the place of the 8.30 train. Tho proposed 9.20 train would beuseful on Saturday nights only for.a few shop assistants who would bo working until 9 o'clock. Tho proposed 10.45 or 11 p.m. train would carry most of the people who now travelled by the 10.12 and 11.30 trains, but it would suit neither class a-s wcH as the pro=ent service. After several councillors had given their opinion, it was resolved that a special l meeting bo held to considor tho propose! alterations. :
