TOURIST RESORTS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—Yesterday I enjoyed the pleasure of the trip from Henley to Taieri Moutti in Mr M'Kegg's oil launch. I have heard many eulogies of this piece of scenery, and find the realisation quite up to expectations. My reason for encroaching oil your space is to draw attention to the unsatisfactory arrangements of trains to and from Henley. On a nice morning- like yesterday one did not object to leaving Dunedin -at 7.45, but returning at 8.15 p.m., too. late to go anywhere except to bed, is enough to upset the most even temper, especially when ono could not blamo tho proprietor of the launch, but had to save his growls for a paternal Government. Reaching Henley at 9 a.m., we had "to cool our heels for half an hour until the south train arrived. In the evening the boat had to return to allow passengers to catch the south train at 5.40 o'clock, and Dunedin passengers had to wait until five minutes to 7. Surely, Sir, this outing is deserving of a better train service. I fail to see why tho express train leaving here at 9.10 a.m. and that arriving at 7 p.m. cannot be stopped for a few moments at Henley .—I am, etc., Local Touhist. Dunedin, January 12..
CITY COUNCIL AND DRAINAGE BOARD - AMALGAMATION SUGGESTED. • . | ■ TO THE . EDITOR. Sir,—These two bodies ought to work together, hand in hand as it were, for their growing client, Greater Dunedin. Do tlier? An-mifortupatc .antagonism has apparently arisen/ The necessary harmony in tne common, interest- is absent, and " hands off" is too', often \ heard in tho deliberations that reach Uio ;pub!ic. : Is: there no'way to get rid of this . obstacle, to economise advancement -in civib'administration? Would the existing' clashing, of. interests: (largoly persona!,. one is compelled- to think) not tend £o disappear ' were the board to omerge itself 'in the council ? Economy -would be looked 1, for in single instead of doublo administration.- Tho engineering .expert of our projected Creator Dunedin oould work out his conceptions free from interpolated obstruction,; and, tho City Council, thus invested.,with a greater dignity and responsibility, would attract to its counsels the best - that .its citijtons could furnish—a, civio gain this which it would be hard to overirate. Did . tho argument .permit. I would rather havo . it' that the ' City Council be merged in ,tbb Drainage Board.—-I am, etc., January 11'. . S. Sdtheeland
