The Railway Department states that the first of the 10 locomotives which Messrs Price Bros., of tho Thames, have contracted Jo build for it will be delivered about August 1. The firm hopes to be ablo to supply the others at tho rate of one or two-per month. During last month 2363 persons, of whom 1628 were males and 740 females, arrived in the colony. The departures were 2791, of 1740 malee and 1051 females. The'excess of departures over arrivals was thus 423. In April of last year the arrivals numbered 2515 and the departures 1950. Speaking at a meeting last night, Mr A, E. Atkinson, ex-M.H.R., said the prohibitionists of Nowtown should bo proud of the members of their Licensing Committee. They bad proved themselves to be men of courage by refusing, in the lirst place, to renew tho licenses, and had shown a. rare spirit of equity by renewing tho licenses immediately upon receipt of tho cabled news of the judgment of tho Privy Council. Tho. committee, might have resigned, or gone to gaol, or at least might have decided to "wait until the written judgment of the Council was received. As it wae, he thought tho committee had acted with an exceedingly fair and equitable spirit. Mr Atkinson expressed tho hope that the Bruce Licensing Committee would follow tho same line, of action as that taken by tho Ncwtown Committee. Hearty applause greeted this expression of opinion.
