PRESENTATION AT CROMWELL.

Messrs Hugh Murray (engineer) and John M'Guiness (winchrnan), of (he Cromwell No. 1 dredge, who arc proceeding to Brazil under engagement to the Rufoell Gold Dredging Company, were entertained at a smoke concert at Dawson's Hotel, Crcinwell, last Saturday evening. During the evening Mr Lewis Harris said they could not allow the guests to depart without expressing their regret at losing them from their midst, as they had endeared themselves to ono and all by their uniform courtesy, good behaviour, and sterling qualities. The regret at parting with them was tempered with the knowledge that, as young men, both natives of this colony, who had not hitherto been outside its boundaries, a splendid opportunity was offered them, not only to see something of the world, but to attain higher positions. As Xew Zealauders ihey were all proud that this colony had been the pioneer of steam dredging, and that not only from Siberia and British Columbia in the ff.r north, but from Burundi, Borneo, Brazil, and other tropical countries, besides our nearer neighbours of New South Wales and Victoria, dredges designed by New Zealand engineers were ordered and working—(applause);—and lost, but not least, the leading hands to work.them had been chosen from the Now Zealand dredgemen, and some of these young men had attained to high and trustworthy positions in their ncv; sphere. On behalf of the boarders he had great plea, sure in presenting Mr Hugh Murray with a ease of »ipes and silver matchbox, and Mr John M'Guiness with a set of brushes ill • leather case, nnd wishing them health, wealth, and prosperity in their future home. After Messrs Murray and M'Guiness had returned tlnmlw for the presentations and or the kind remarks made concerning them, their heal lis were drunk with musical honours. During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs h. .Jolly, E. Brown, I\ 11'llr.hoii, and W Beamish, and the proceedings were brought lo » close with the toast of " The Host and. Hostess" (Mr and Mrs Dawson).
