HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

Tho monthly meeting of tho High Schools Board of Governors, held last night, was attended by Dr Brown (chairman), his Worship the Mayor (Mr T. Scott), the Rev. A. Cameron, and Professor Shand. An apology for absenco was read from the Rev. P. B. Fraser.

Mr G. M. Thomson, analyst, forwarded an analysis of the sample of Wyndham Valley coal forwarded him, which statod that while tho coal might bo useful to the neighbourhood it contained so large a proportion of ash that it would not pay to carry far.— Received.

Tho Rector of the Boys' High School wrote:—"My attention is drawn by certain boys and parents concerned to tho fact that ii° m a '.' wl authorities refuse free passes to all laien boys attending this school, not holders of scholarships, on tho ground that such boys are passing the local District ilign School at Mosgiel. It seems to me that this is, in tho interests of education, a hurtful and undesirable restriction. It is aiso i unreasonable, inasmuch as tho boys of Outran), for instanco, are offered freo education at this school but are refused the travelling privileges allowed to other children. 1 erhaps if the hardship were brought under tho notice of the Minister concerned the matter might bo put right."—lt was decided to forward' tho rector's lotter to the Ministers of Education and Railways. The Lady Principal wrote intimating that Lady Ranfurly had forwarded prizes for history competition and for drawing.—The secretary was instructed to acknowledge tho gifts with thanks.
