PERSONAL NOTES.

Rov. H. L. Mamircs, the newly-appointed Methodist minister at Gore, arrived from the north last evening, and proceeds to his charge this morning. Mr George H. Uttley, M.A., has been appointed assistant master in the Wailaki Boys' High (School. An Auckland telegram states that the steam yacht Valhalla, with Earl Crawford on board, arrived at Papeete from Valparaiso on March 31. The yacht comes on to Auckland shortly. Tlio death is announced of Mr Gideon Rutherford, of Castlerock, near Timaru, and' formerly of Kakamii. Mr Rutherford was a well-known brooder and judge of sheep. One of his daughters is the wife of the Rev. Thomas Spurgeon, of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, and another is Mrs Knight, of Dunedin. News has been received of the somewhat sudden death at Auckland of Mr Robert Ilislop, who has for some years been railway stationmaster at Clinton. After he had been on extended leave of absence he was superannuated as from April Inst. Mr Hislop arrived in Dunedin about 26 years ago, and, having been connected with railways in Mauritius, joined the railway service in Dunedin as chief clerk to Mr A. Grant, who was then general manager in Otago. Deceased was promoted to be stationmaster, and filled that position at Palmerston', Mosgiel, and latterly at Clinton. He has tliree sorw in tlio service—Robert Hislop, audit inspector of - railways: A. Hislop, running sheds foreman at Woodvillo ; and J. Hislop, stationmaster at Woodlands. The Hon. Br Grace, M.L.C., who was operated on. on Wednesday by Dr Collins, is still very weak. Mr ,T. B. Heywood, Secretary to the Treasury, who has been in ill-health lately, has left for Rotorua (telegraphs our Wellington correspondent), and will be away for abput a morith. His duties have been taken' up by Mr R. .T. Collins, assistantsecretary of the department. Dr Mason. Chief Hoalth Officer, who accompanies this .parliamentary party on their South Sen Islands cruise, will visit the lope? islands' at. Penrhyn, and will also investigate several diseases to be found among the inhabitants of the other New Zealand islands. In Dr Mason's absence Dr Frengley, of the Nelson district, joins Dr Valintine, assistant ■ chief health officer, in the work of the Wellington district. Dr Frengloy will continue to direct- the Nelson, Marlborough. and Wcstland district, but froin the head office, instead of the district office, Nelson.
