OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of tha Education Board, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs W. Snow (chairman), R. Peattie, W. Nicolson, A. Marshall, James JMiteholl, James Sim, and tho Kcv. P. B. Praser. Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., sent an apology for absence. IMIT.OVESIENTS AND nSPAIRS. Tho following- claims for half tho cost of sundry improvements and repairs were granted:—Fairfax (fencing, etc.), £2 4s; AVharekuri (pump, oto.), £3 10s; Waikouaiti (repairs to tho janitor's house), £12. Tho architect's report was adopted in respect to tho following applications, and the work authorised to be dono:—Hooper's Inlet (repairs to buildings); Morhona (tanks, drainage, windows, etc.); Oamaru North (drainage at residence, etc.); Maungatua (repairs). Tho architect was instructed to report on tho application of the Otiake Committee for tho orcction of outbuildings.
Tho teacher at Manuka Creek was granted permission to lease tho residence; and the teacher at Incholme was allowed to lease tho glebe for 12 months.
Tho Railway Department replied that in regard to the board's request for trains to stop at Rough Ridge to allow children to get off it could not meet the board in tho matter.—lt w ; as decided to intimate this decision to the Ida Valley Committee. The Inspectors reported on the application of tho Fairfax Committee for additions to tho infant classroom, and stated'there was sufficient accommodation for the present.— It was accordingly decided to take no action in the matter. ,
Tho Inspectors reported on the stato of tho teacher's residence at Waipiata, which was very bad indeed—lt was deoided to ask the teacher and the committee for an explanation for allowing this state of things. Tho recommendation for the appointment of the following officers for the cadet battalions was adopted:—First Battalion: Major Murray, Adjutant M'Loren, Quartermaster M'Lesn. Second Battalion: Major Chapman, Adjutant Smith, Quartermaster Fitzgerald. Third Battalion': Major Burlinson. Adjutant Smeaton, Quartermaster Whetter. Four (South Otago) Battalion: Major M'Elrey, Adjutant Moir, Quartermaster Jones, Mr C. R. Smith, was appointed' lieutenant of the Kaitangata Cadets.
The following tenders were accepted:— Naseby, additional classroom, Ball and Son, £215; Technical School at Port Chalmers, 'Joseph Manning, £467. The. department forwarded copies of correspondence from • tho Arthur Street School Committeo in respect to the marking of rolls, and askect if the board had reason to eupposo that the practices referred to were followed in any schools under the board's control.—Consideration was deferred as tho whold of the correspondence had not been received.
Tho secretary brought under the notice of the board tho, now regulations regarding tho attendance of schools, and submitted tho new fchedulo of quarterly returnE.— It was decided to instruct schoolmasters to fill up tho column relating to echool holidays when compiling his quarterly returns.
A complaint was received from a parent at_ Mosgicl that a boy was punished for going to school .barefooted.—lt was decided to refer tho teacher to the regulations dealing with tho matter, and (o inform him that ho was in no way justified in punishing s. boy for going barefooted.
Tho board then went into committee.
