CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The usual monthly meeting of the committee of tho Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present the Hon. T. Fergus (in the chair), and Messrs R. M. Clark, C. P. M. Butterworth, W. Grow, J. IT. Gallaway, and H. Salmon. An • apology for absence was received from tho president (Mr 0. W. Rattray) oil account of being out of town. Mr Clark reported, on behalf of the subcommittee appointed to deal with the question of the preparation of general average (itatements. It was resolved, that copies ■of the correspondence and of the report be sent to the. New Zealand Skipping Company and to the .London Chamber of Commerce. A. letter was received from the Lawrencejßoxburgh Railway League inviting a representative of tho chamber to accompany Members of Parliament on & trip over the proposed extension of the railway from liawrenoe, <jo as to. view the nature of the country it will pass through.—lt was decided to thank the league for .the invitation, and to request tho president of the chamber to attend if possible. A letter was received from tho agent of an importing firm bringing before the chamber flri instance in which cargo had been short delivered by steamer from New York, lyliioh remained in port for a day or two only, and endowing letters from the agents of the vessel in Dunedin and from their solicitors to show that there appeared to be no means of recovery for W of cargo -in such cases.—lt was'resolved to forward qopie9 of the correspondence to the Government and to the City M.H.R.'s, with a view of bringing under their notice the injustice under whioh consignees suffer and the aecassity for legislation on tho subject.
