THE WOODHAUGH BRASS BAND.

A. concert was given in the George Street School Gymnasium last night by the Woodliaugh Brass Band, with the assistance of a number of friends. The band has had a very brief existence so far, having only been formed on January 7 of the present year. The band, which by liio way claims to be a " Temperance " as well as brass band, was organised by its present conductor, Mr It. Smith. This gentleman would appear to have a penchant for getting bands afoot, for iliis is the eighth which lias been reared by his hands, the others being tlio Caversham, Anderson's Bay, Portobcllo, Vaitati, I'avensbourne, l'clichct Bay, and the Contra! Mission Lands. The Woodhaugh Brass Band comprises some 30 instrumentalists, equipped with a r.ew set of instruments obtained largely, from the Dresden Company. Only three of its luembcrs had ever blown into tho mouthpiece of an instrument prior to being taken ill hand by .Mr Smith, and tlio performance given last night certainly went to bear out this statement, which was made by tho conductor—in fact, the Chairman (Mr Davidson) announced llut the selections given that evening constituted tho twelfth practice tho members had had together, and, tins being the case, they wiil not'ho accused of a lack of confidence in making a public appearance at this stage. The vocalists who assisted at the concert were Misses Dunsmuir, Chalmers, and Tattersfield, Mr T. Flynn, and A. Johnstone. Mr B. A. de Lautour gave violin solos, Mr D. M'Donald danced first a hornpipo and then a clog dance, while Miss Sims gave a recitation. The whole programme w very enthusiastically received, and in nearly every case repetitions cr supplementary items wo:c asked for and given. Mr Hirnmel played the accompaniments.
