A meeting of the North-East Vallev Borough '.. Council was held last evening for tho purpose, 1.0 l confirming a resolution that iho council ! do now abolish all subdivisions within the, ' borough. The meeting was attended by. the Mayor (Mr Duncan), Crs Green, Brittenden, ' Evaais, Short, Bottiug, and Campbell. • ! The council expressed its sympathy with Cr ' Brittenden at the recent death of his brothel. Members of the council then referred to the absence of tho Mayor from the recent function : ; in connection with turning the first sod of the ! ' electrical tramways the Mayor stating that ho never had any intention of being present. A , reference on his part as to tho treatment he had . received at the hands of tho council in tho I matter of the trams brought Cγ Green to his : feet with the remark that ho had always ob- | served a porfectly respectful attitude towards ! tho present and past mayors. A sew further i rnnaiks passed on the subject, and then j Cr Brittenden moved, and Cr Botting j seconded, the confirmation of tho resolution ! for tho abolishing of the wards. j Cr Green opposed the confirmation, though ■ he knew it'was only wasting time to do so. As ', a representative'of the borough he felt that I the ratepayers, who should really have the control, were in future- not to be represented. He i bslieved that the weaker portions should be ■ supported by the stronger portions, but as it j was the stronger portions were going to I ; ai'nihilato Iho weaker portions. At present j ; each ward had it 3 representative, and each its j revenue, and what fairer system, he.asked, : ' could exist. If the resolution was confirmed j the money would be spent on the stronger por- j ; tions of the borough, and the outside portions - would be left to take care of themselves.—(Cr ', Evans: "No").—There was tho fear that; matters would not bo carried out as honour- . nbly in the future as they had been in the past, ; ' but so long as the present personnel of the ! council continued there was not much fear of! . that. Theio would, however, ba a difference j in the personnel in the future. He would con- : ten£ himself by simply voting against what he i believed to be a- step in tho wrong direction. ; The Mayor did not anticipate any such mis- ': representation and misapplication of the hinds. I i Cr Campbell said he also intended to vote | ■' against the confirmation of the resolution. Like j i Cr Green he did not know that there was any . • use in doing so except to enter hig protest ! against the proposal: Ho wns rather surprised that his colleagues for West Ward hud thought ■ ■ it right to vote for the nbolition of the ward ; system. Under the existing system each ward's ; : accounts were kept separate, and each ward ; had always had its money spent where it was ' ] wanted. i ) Cr Brittanden, as the mover of the motion, ' briefly replied, and, on the motion being put, it • was carried, only Cr3 G-resn n,nd Campbell voting against it. .The Mayor, on being asked tho ; question, said he voted with the "ayes." ' i Cr Botting then motcd. Cr Brittenden 1 seconded, and it was resolved—" That the new ■ council consist of nine membere, and that the ; town clerk take tho necessary steps to hfivo p the matter gazetted in accordance with tho j Municipal Corporations Act. , j Tho meeting then terminated.. ; PORT CHALMEHS. ; I The Port Chalmers Borough Council met ' yesterday. evening, -when there were present— } The Mayor (Mr J.
