LORD HAWKE'S TEAM. ■ (Per United Press Association.) OHRISTCffURCH, September 1. 'At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket "Council, held on Saturday night, the report of the sub-committee appointed to consider the possibility of arranging matches between Lord Hawke'e team and the Australian Council Avas prnsentcd. It was pointed out that when tho.Hawke team have fulfilled the New Zealand programme the council have no further claim on them, and to attempt to raise objections to their playing in Australia would bo objectionable. At the Bamei time, if it had not been for New Zealand enterprise the team avouM not play in Australia, and as cricketing interests there must derive a considerable revenue from the visit, the Australian management might be fairfy invited to contribute in a liberal spirit toward? the expense?. It was finally resolved to cable Lord Hawke stating that the council had no objection to his team playing in Australia. ALBION CRICKET CLUB. . The thirty-ninth annual meeting of the !A.lbion Cricket Club was held in the' Caledonia Hotel last evening. There Avere 45 persons in attendance. In the unavoidable absence of Mr James Allen, MiH.R. (president),. Mr B. T. Ringer (a vice-president) occupied, the chair. Messrs T. A. Maitland and H. Islip wrote apologising for their nonftttendance. The annual report (already published) was taken ae read. . The Chairman, in moving its adoption, said he was very pleased to see so large an attendance. He had been present at a good many annual meetings during the last 18 years, but he did not remember having seen ai, any previous meeting so large a gathering as there was there that night. Ho thought it augured very well for the buckoes of the club during the forthcoming season. Hβ was glad to be able to note that the anticipations of' the chairman sit the last annual meeting had been realised to a very great extent, both in regard to the improvement of the ground and the number of matches won by the club during the season. Kb one, had been more delighted than himself at the progress made by the First Eleven during the last -few seasons. He. felt confident that if the members only kept together and attended regularly at the practices they AVould be at the top or second from the top at the end of the approaching season.—(Hear, hear.) The President's team iiad won the Third Class Championship during the year.—(Applause.) It Avas the first time for many years that the club had secured' a championship. He hoped some of the other teams would follow the example of _ the President's team and win a. championship during the coming season.—(Applause.) The committee were to be congratulated on the manner in Avhich they had managed the club. The ground had been kept in splendid order, and it had been, a pleasure for the (supporters of the club and the public generally to attend and watch the matches. The Winter Club had been a great success, And he was sure it had done a lot of good in keeping members together. He would also like to congratulate the club. on the inclusion of Messrs Williams and Gcddes in the interprovincial team of last year, and he hoped that a few more , of their members would represent the province in forthcoming interprovincial matches,—(Applause.) It ought to be the height of their ambition to represent the province. The balance sheet w&s very satisfactory, and spoke well for the energy of their secretary (Applause.) When the additions to the pavilion Avere finished it would be a handsome and Use-ful structure. Mr v. J. Clark seconded the motion. He said that not for many years had the a-nhunl report been so satisfactory. It. reflected great orodit on the players and officers of the club. For years the club had had, a etern and uphill fight, but the members had never lost heart, but had continued to play the g&ihe for the game's Sake. He thought the club had now turned the corner, and he lioped before, long to see it in its old place at th.e top of the tree.—(Applause.) He drew attontion «> the necessity, of getting honorary members, and said in regard to the ground thai the club owed a debt of gratitude to the Mr E.- Gibson for the work he liad'done in the Avay of improving it, and to those Other members who had assisted him.-—(Applause;/ There had been remarkable harmony betAveen the members, who all worked.loyally for the good of the club, iwid he. was glari to say they had also a large amount of outside,sympathy.—(Hear, hoar.) After a short discussion, the motion was put..-and csi'necl unanimously. The election of officers was then proceeded •with, and veeulted as follows Mr James Allen, M.H.R., president, Mr T. A. Maitland; vice-.presidents—Dr Closs, Messrs Islip, Wright, Clark, Ringev, Gruer, Cohen, Shelton, and Cummings; captain of club, Mr L. Joel *,' secretary and treasurer, Mr G. GummiugD; committp-e—Messrs Winsor, Williams. Thomson, Peake, Corbett, and Aris; delegates to thc'Otago Cricket Association, Messrs Ritchie and Clark: Match Committee, Messrs Williams and Winsor; practice.captains, Messrs Arid and Winsor; hon.' auditors, Messrs Maryatt and Duncan; delegate to the Protection Society, Mr G. dimming!:, ' . ' ' Votes of thanks wore paeeed to the scorers, Messrs W. A. Robertson and G. D. Robertson; and especially to the retiring secretary, Mr D. Thomson, of whom it was said that he had i;sen the best secretary the club had' had, he- Iming spared neither time nor trouble to further its interests. The trophiefi atou during the season wero then presented to the winners by the chairman. It was intimated that a number of trophies had boon promised for competition during the coming year.
