I, at 1.4 a.m.) A very large field started for the Dunlop Road Race, Wannambool to Melbourne, including most of the leading riders of the C'oruln on wealth and four New Zealanders—Ralston, Forbes, Calder, and Chambers. The weather was showery. Immense crowds assembled 'to witness the finish. Tile winner was Chappell, a Victorian, with 65niin. start. He covered the distance of 105 miles in 9hr Omin 3,'iec. Castles (55tnin) and M'Donald (70min start), both Victorians, were eecond and third respectively. The winner has never bnfore previously started in big events. O'Callighaii, a Victorian, made the fastest time (Bhr dGmin 23sec). ■ A SWIMMING RECORD. LONDON, August 29. (Received August 30, at 9.5 a.m.) Lane, the Australian swimmer, has beaten his own 300 yards record at Liverpool Baths. He covered the distance in 3min 22 l-ssee. A Melbourne message states that, the racehorse San Fran has been sold to the New Zealand Loan ■ and Mercantile Agency Company. San Fran leaves for New Zealand shortly. The Dunedin Homing Pigeon Club's Lawrence race takes place on Saturday, and is exciting much . interest tho. fancy.
