CHRISTCHURCH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

(Pib United Phkss Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. Mr W. Wood, president of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, at the annual meeting this afternoon, urged tho necessity for a direct lino to South Africa, but said steamers should not call at Australia, which was New Zealand's rival. Ho suggested that arrangements be made with tho Ocean Steamship Company to take a cargo for South Africa. In regard to the frozen meat trade, he_ said it was in a satisfactory position, but might bo improved by the appointment of an association or individuals to look after its interests in London. Ho also urged the completion of the Midland railway. The chamber passed a motion urging on the Government tho importance of early arrangements being made for a steam service to South Africa, and suggested that tho Now Zealand Shipping Company, Shaw, Savill, ♦J? m p om P au y. Uuion Company, and the Tyser Lines bo given an opportunity to tender for tho service.
