PROMISE AND PERFORMANCE.
: * (Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, July 11. At the Southland County Council meeting to-day some hard things wore said by members regarding tho lapse between promise, as represented by votes on parliamentary estimates, and performance, as shown in payment thereof. This applied to votos through tho Lands Department and Mines Department. It was pointed out that ratepayers saw these votes mentioned in print, and not knowing that the money was notpaid over, many would bo convb'ineed that tho council had got the cash, and wero keeping it up their sleeves. The position was getting serious, and members were threatened with extinction because thoy could not make bricks without straw. It was resolved to bring tho matter before the member for Mataura in the particular case under review. One member said that £1200 from the Treasury was absurd as an aid to rates totalling £16,000 a your. The rate should bo 10s in the pound, and stable at that, It shoulfl also filter 1 through the council, and not the Government Department.
