Season.—The ordinary spring, or time of the •year when vegetation generally begins, depends entirely on climate, ami it necessarily varies considerably- :n different parts of New Zealand, Speaking according to astronomical rules, the t-easou-? depend 0:1 the sun's position in the zodiac; spring and antnmn commeneo at the equinoxes,- summer and winter at the solstices, and therefore winter commences hen pbput - 21st June, The seasons are not usually regarded in ordinary conversation, from this, point of view, but rather as the periods when the growth or failure of vegetation, tells its tale, and from this latter .standpoint winter, mpy no doubt fairly be said to begin a month earlier than the laws of astronomy justify us in placing it—that is, about 21st May,
