CENSUS RETURNS.

THE CITY OF DUNEDIN. The full particulars with regard to the census for the City of Dunedin are supplied as follows by. Mr C. C. Graham, the chief ( enumerator:— 1901. 180 G. SOUTH WAKB. Graham, tho chief census enumerator for the district, we are enabled to present this week a table showing the population of Dunedin and suburbs at tho census recently taken, and the comparison between it and the population at the previous census in 1901. It will be seen that we have included (Jrecn Island as & suburb of Dunedin. 'We do not think that any reasonable objection can be taken to this. On the other hand, the popular locality of Anderson's Bay, tiic population of which should, strictly speaking, be reckoned in that of Dunedin and suburbs, is included for tenuis purposes, as it is in regard to local government, in the Peninsula County. The following is the table: — -6 °-;- 2;- °s- 5:- s2 || Slti &Cf Cf rt CI H uf I . CI O 6 O cl d f © o t, co |MiorHOnnoo'-oo » V rt o" cf cf n" „" n~ -f ft j Cl '•drtSoSSooocilS In 5 ,ft to. From the above figures it will be seen that the population of Dunedin and suburbs has increased by 5031 in the period ot five years. The largest increase has occurred naturally in the city proper, in which the population shows an increase of 2029. The greatest relative increase lias occurred, lioivover, in the Borough of .St. Kilda, which ha? completely outstripped that of Maori Hiil, and lias actually increased its population to a greater extent than C.iversham and even than Itoslyu. In view of the extensive building of dwelling houses which has been witnessed in the last few years in the Musselburgh direction, it was anticipated that a heavy increase of population wouW be shown in St. Kilda, but it was hardly to be supposed that, with the exception of .South Dunedin. it would be the suburb showing not relatively only, but actually, the largest growth. It beats Koslyn in the increase of its population by one soul—sls to 514. South Dunedin claims an increaso of 771, Caversham of 503, and Mornington of 425. The North-East A r al!ey does not .show much progress, its population having increased by 152. West Harbour has just failed to add three figures to its numbers, Maori Hill has added 63 to its numbers, and Green Island lias been .nlmost stationary, its population having increased at the modest avcrago of one inhabitant for each year since the last census. The female population of the city and suburbs is, it will be noticed, considerably larger than the male. The ulnerence is 2518. But the excess ol females is less than it was five vears ago, when, with a smaller total population, the numbers of the gentler tox were 2545 more than those of tho males. In tliK circumstance may perhaps be found one explanation of the present scarcity of domestic labour in Dunedin. BRUCE COUNTY.
