NEW BUILDINGS.

Till". PROGRESS OF THE CITY,

Several large buildings have lately been erected by fiims in Dunedin, and several more are to be built shortly. We purpose in thin article lo refer briefly to the extent of these now structures. Messrs liutler Bros, are Greeting a threestorey brick ami cement building at the corner of Water and Vogel streets, with a frontage to' Water street of 82 ft 6in and to Vogel street of 48ft. Tin? front is nicely broken ui> with, plasters and panels, fill'mounted with two pediments. The main enIrauco is from Water street. The offices faco this street, and at the> rear of them are the filling* and the collar racks. The partitions o[ the offices are finished with dado below on V-jointed lining, and above aro glazed with dinner glaw. The cart entrance is in Water street, and at the inner end of it are tbo lavatories On the first floor there are shelving, counters, and filtiiig.l. The walla of tbo ground and first lloon are covered with tongnod-aud-gioovcd lining. A splendid show room, fitted all round, with drawers and counters, is situated tin the first floor. On the second floor is tlio bulk store, 64ft. 9i» by 45ft 3in. The work, or packing, room it on thn Fiuno level. The floor is composed of concrete, with steel girders, and all openings ure protected by fireproof doors. There is a. neparato entrance to the packing room by means of an iron staircase. At the, rear of tlio packing room there are lavatories, which are fitted overhead with lantern lights. The ventilation throughout is all that could be desired. Above this floor is the sail loft, 58ft by 40ft, lit from the roof I>y Wade's, patent nkylights. There is a hydraulic lift communicating with all the floors of the building from the. ground to thn top. Mr G. Hiiuipson is the contractor fur the building. The old part of Wain's Motel in Manse ftvect is to bo taken down shortly, and an up-to-date three-storey brick building and b:\«cment erected in its plate. This novt part will bo in the Renaissance style. The basement is divided into cellarage, lavatories, and beer cellars, lit from tho street with Luxifcr primn lights. Tho main entrance from Manso street will be finished with neat panelled and moulded dado of figured red pino and stamped steel ceilings. Thcro will bo two bar?, with parlours off them. A shop will face, the street, nml Messrs Crust and Crust's buildings will bo chtiroly renovated. At the. rear will be a new kitchen, fitted up in the most complete wanner, The first floor is divided into suites of rooms, with the latest ideas in the way of baths, basins, and lavatories. Tho top floor is set apart for single bedrooms, and is also fitted with baths, ote. Tenders havo been called for the building, and will close shortly. Messrs Mollieon's building, al tho corner of [Jcorgc and Frederick streets, is ono of tho ornaments of that part of tho town. It J is a three-storey building, with very large cellarage. A verandah of the latest style, with hundreds of feat of glass, gives a fine effect to tl)0 promises, and thoicornicps and carving display much skill on tlte part of thn workmen. There aro six large windows of plate-glass, which are splendidly adapted as u means of displaying samples of the many goods which may bo purchased within. In«ido tho promises thero is largo floor space, and one cannot fail to notice a very fine piece of furniture in tho sbape of a casJl disk, made of specially-nicked figured red pine, polished. Passing several" counters ono comes to the dress department, which has been specially built with n view to iifford tho beet possible light and to give plenty of fixtures and floor Epaee. A very large lantern has been erected, which throws down a perfect light. In the corner of this depnrtKi»nt is tho privato office of the firm. Retracing one's Etcps and passing through an archway on tho right the counting house and the telephone office arc reached, adjoin-\ ing which is the furnishing department. A door from this department leads into the cellar, whore all tho reserve stock ie kept. Ascending the magnificent staircase of figured ■red pine ono enters (he ladies' department— a very fine showroom, with plenty of space, —nnd, after, viewing several other departments, an archway takes tho visitor to i. levator} , for the uso of customers. In this part of the building are the dressmaking and fitting rooms, of which there aro three. Facing George street is a large room, which the firm intend for a tea room, from tho windows of which fino views may bo obtained of the city. The room is artistically finished in V-jointed lining, a reeded <!ado below with moulded and reeded , capping and necking, the ceilings being panelled, and all finished with Bon Accord paint. The tailor's cutting room is also situate in this part of the building. A stair leads to the" top floor, nhoro tlio , workrooms arc located. Those are four in number—two dressmaking rooms, u millinery room, and p. tailoring room. They aro nil separate rooms, and ample provision bos been made for light nnd comfort. The premises arc lighted throughout with the newest incandescent burners. The verandah has fivo very large arc lights, which havo a striking brightness. Messrs M'Gill and Sons were the contractors. ' Messrs D. Benjamin and Co. have just had completed a very large and commodious warehouse, stores, and offices, adjoining their premises in Dowling street. Entering from Dowling street and' turning to the left, ono enters a new counting house, 4Wt by 17ft. This is subdivided into different branches and' fitted with lavatories. Immediately above this is the tobacco department, with neat counters and shelving, and is lit from the roof with lantern lights. In the same portion of tho building the firm have a tobacco show room, 18ft by 10ft, fitted up with counters, glazed partitions, and stained fittings, .presenting a very handsome appearance. The packing nnd forwarding store, which is. on the ground floor, is 84ft long and 42ft wide. Above if is tho main showroom, 'lCOft long and 42ft wide, the walls being lined and the ceilings neatly broken up with panels and cut cornices. The second floor is the crate, floor, which ie of the same dimensions as the main showroom. The top floor i.< for bulk. Tho whole of the floors are complete with all necessary fittings, hydraulic lifts, and hoist, and are well lit from three sides. The'building has just left thn hum's of the contractors, Messrs Foster and George. MfMM Levin and Co. (Limited), of Wellington, ore having a large three-storey brick nnd cement . building erected in the Empire City, at the' corner of Custom house . quay, Waring Taylor street, and Foiilherslon street. The frontage to Custom liouro quay is 88ft, to Waring Taylor street 184 ft 6in, and to Featherstun street 100 ft. Tho floor is classic. As showing how electricity is coining into uso in. the colony,' it may be mentioned that it is used in this building not only for lighting but for the wool nnd store lifts and tho hoists.' Mr .lames Trevor is the contractor.. Tlm'areliiteot for all theso buildings is Mr James Hisldp, of Dowling street. In consequence »f the. increase of his business in the north, Mr Hislop has found it necessary to send Mr K. \V. Wnlden, who has been with him for so many years, to take charge of the Wellington branch. Mr AValden will have a competent staff under him.
