SCOTTISH CHIEF DREDGING COMFAOT The aunual meeting of the Scottish Chief Drying Company was held at Lawrence on ThSy evenu>g, when there were presentMess sB Hart ? hainnan), fc. Wood (Duneto I tTxua (Tnapeta Month), A. Macdonald, F. Vivian Geo. Leslie \Vm. Adams, H Hart, and J. C. Arbuckle. A large number of shares were represented by proxy. The report was as follows:- lho machinery is now completed and shipped from Glasgow, and the timber for tho pontoons is lying at the dredge site, and the building of the same will be proceeded with at an early date. If arrears of calls are paid promptly no time will bo lost in pushing on erection of dredge. In common with many other pompanies, your directors have found it difficult to get in ,the calls, and Uavo placed the matter in the hands of their solicitor for recovery—with good results, lho arrears on the l 3 t January were £3528 16s, and now they stand at £2100, and legal proceedings will be taken for recovery thereof. In several cases shareholders have asked time, promising payments by instalments, and these requests have been, whenever practicable, complied with, as your directors do not wish to act harshly; but the time has now arrived when thay are compelled to adopt strict measures. The claim is one in which we have every confidence, and we are most anxious in the interests of shareholders to have the' dredge working at as early a date as possible; but to do this it is absolutely necessary that shareholders should pay their calls regularly in order that no financial delay may occur in carrying out tho necessary work to a completion." In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the Chairman stated that tho machinery had arrived from Home, and would be forwardod, to the claim without delay. The whole of the timber pontoonß was lying at the claim and in readiness to mako an immediate start with their construction, The shareholders could therefore see that it would not take long to havo the dredge working if the calls came in promptly, but the directors had decided not to incur liabilities in excess of the capital that came in, so that if delay occurred they would recognise it was tho the fault of tho dilatory shareholders and not the directors. As to the merits of lho claim, in his opinion it was a, very promising property, containing, as it did, a very largo area of both river and beach capable of being worked winter or summer, and any shareholder with any knowledge of mining visiting the claim could not fail to come to th 6 oaiuo conclusion. Mr W. Wood seconded the motion. Mr D. Eraser endorsed the remarks mado by Mr Hart, and, speaking from his local knowledge, he thought there were ley, if any, claims which would prove a greater success than the Scotish Chief. Other shareholders having expressed themselves in a similarly hopeful manner in regard to the prospects of tho claim, the motion was j put and carried, unanimously. Messrs B. Hart nndi Wm. Adams were reelected directors, and Mr J. C. Arbuckle I auditor. On the motion of Messrs Arbucklo and Vivian a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to tho directors for their valuable services during the past year.

DAY DAWN GOLD DREDGING COM-

PANY. An extraordinary general meeting of the Day Dawn Gold Dredging Company was held on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance. The Chairman (Mr Somerville) laid before the meeting tho following resolutions:—(l) "That the capital of the company be increased to £7850 by the creation of 830 new shares.of £1 each." (2) "That anything in regulation No. 27 of table A to ' The Companies Act, 1882/ to the contrary notwithstanding, the directors' arJ hereby authorised to issue such SSO new sharc3 as fully paid-up shares, together with the 400 shares remaining unissued of the original capital of the company also as fully paid-up shares, in satisfaction pro tanto of tho purchase money for any dredge which the directors may purchase for the company." Before the resolutions were put, a discussion ensued. The chairman was requested to read Mr Roberts's report on the claim, and one of the shareholders desired an explanation as to why they dispensed with his services, seeing that he was appointed as engineer to the company. Was it because ho gavo an unfavourable report on the claim? The only reason tendered was that they did not get the consideration they were entitled to, A shareholder of the Nugget Company's claim commenced to give a glowing account of that claim, and advised tho Day Dawn directors to take it ove'r. According to the speaker, tho Nugget was a second Hartley and Hilcy. One of the Day Dawn shareholders asked if the claim was so good, why not keep it? and if it would only take JSOO to put the dredge in a position to bottom their claim, surelv they could manage to raise that. The shareholders present seemed to favour tho company being wound up, and-a committee was appointed to confer with the directors and discuss'the position. After two hours of lively discussion, the meetingstood adjourned until that day two weeks.
