AN EXCITING INCIDENT AT POLO.

(Fboh'Oub Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, March 15. While the polo match between New Zealand and Victoria was in full swing this afternoon, and everyone was intent on the game, a little girl of between two and threeyears of age strayed on to a corner of the field. - Suddenly the game, which had been in front of the goal, changed, and the ponies came galloping down to where the child was standing. It seemed a thousand to one that she would be knocked over and killed. At this moment the, attention of Mr Phil Nathan, who was standing in the crowd at that end of the field, was directed to the peril in which the child was. Without a second's hesitation he ran out, caught the child up in hi* arms, and doubled himself over her so that she should not be struck. No sooner had lie done this than fhe ponies were down on him in a cluster. One of the players took vx the situation, and he just managed to swerve his horo aside, and the pony jumped right over the prostrate man and child. Then Mr Nathan pickedhimself up and took the child to its mother. The whole thing was over in a few seconds, and when it was seen that neither man nor child had received a scratch, a hearty round of applause greeted th.? plucky deed. Mr Nathan is a brother of M« David Nathan, the well-known merchant of this city, and is himself a polo player.
