CASUALTIES.
What might have been a serious casualty was averted on Wednesday night in Port Chalmers by the presence o( mind of a young man named Hamblyn. It appears a stranger to the Port named William Johnson, who arrived late in tho evening, went for a walk down tho George street pier (the most dangerous at all times of any in the Port), when by some means his foot tripped and hft wns thrown overboard. His cries for aid attracted the -attention of Hamblyn, who at once procured a. boat and went to his, aid, bringing him quickly to shore. Ho was oonveyod to Chick's Hotel and promptly attended by Dr Itarrie, who gave discctions for his treatment, the result being that yesterday morning tho man was in his normal state of health.
