Colonel ' Penton and staff met the firet train, and welcomed Colonel Wyndham and his command. The first train load was detrained and formed in front of the railway Btation in a railed-off space, kept clear by the local volunteers. The immense crowd in this very wide pnrt of tie street cheered continuously. The street was specially lighted for the occasion. Tho whole marched' to the Exhibition Building. The streets were lined with a cheering but orderly crowd. The troops were entertained to supper in the southern annexe.' The oflicors were entertained in the Great Hall, No greater demonstration uas ever been seen in the city, only Jhe relief of Mafeting equalling it. The officers were entertained at supper at the Christehurch and Canterbury Clubs to-night. After the men hnd finished supper .they were drawn up in the building, and remained ohatting and talking with oivilians, who thronged the premises, until the officers returned, at about 10 o'clock, The Iroop3 then inarched out to the street. The Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry were a guard of honour, and the Garrii-on Band accompanied the mon, who then marched straight down to the railway stution between deneo rows of people.
