[Broglie (Charles Jacques Victor Albert, Due de), French ex-Slinister, was born in Paris on June 13,1821, an<H was educated in the University of Paris. He first entered the Diplomatic Service, and was Secretary of the French Embassies in Madrid and Rome prior to the Revolution of 1848; ho then retired into private life "until 1871, when ho was elected a Deputy. For some .time he was French Ambassador in London. In' 1873 he became Minister 1 oi Foreign Affairs and President of the Council; he was defeated, and resigned, with ins Ministry, in 3871. In 1877 ho succeeded M. Jules Simon as President of the Council of Ministers, Keeper of'the Seajs, and Ministra of Justice, but be resigned these posts in tho same yeai. Since then he took no active part in politics. He was dieted a member of the French Academy in 1562.
