The dredges here have not resumed work. The Monte Christo pontoons got aground during the rise, but have since been floated off. 'J'lie Vincent Extended dredge is nbotttready to swing into position for starting operations. NOTES PROM ALEXANDRA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) 'ALEXANDRA, January 10. The Molyneux continued rising throughout the night, but commenced to fall in the early morning, the height to-day being 12ft above normal. The highest point reached bv the flood was 12ft Gin. ' The Dunstan Lead pontoons will be finished in'a few. days..! . . ■ ■Repairs' are'.being carried out on the Enterprise No. 1, Earnscleugh No. 2, and Chicago dredges. The erection of the electrical plant for the Earnscleugh No. 3 Company is nearly finished. The Ngapara dredge is stopped for an overhaul. , THE WAIHI MINE. (Per .United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Janua/y 10. The Waihi Gold Mining Company's final clean-up for the year 1909 for 18 days consisted of G334 tons, which yielded gold to the value of £20,325. The total yisld for the year was £315,135, which exceeded the previous year by £12,311. The total won from the mine since the commencement of crushing operations is £i,5i0,8i4.. : . .

THE BIG PUMP AT THE THAMES.

(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 10. The present unsatisfactory position with reference to the drainage of the Thamca goldfields lias directed attention to the method of | fixing contributions made by the companies ; towards the cost of pumping. At present ' contributions arc fixed by the Drainage Board, and as the board is composed of represcnta- : tives of the various interested companies thero is a natural tendency that each member should ; endeavour to secure' the lightest assessment possible for his own company. At a meeting j of the board to-day it was suggested that tho j assessment be made by the Government, and i this matter will be urged on tho Minister for Mines on arrival in Auckland next week. Meantime tho pumps have been stopped, and the water has risen 37ft. The decision of tho j warden on the point debated before him as to ; the board's title to sue is being awaited, and i thero is r.o likelihood of pumping being resumed until, this matter, has been cleared up. NOTES FROM WAKATIPU. (Fnoa Our Own Correspondekt.) CARDRONA AS A DREDGING FIELD. ARROWTOWN, January 4.—Dredging at' Cardrona seems to be undergoing at present i one of those unaccountable relapses for which j there is no apparent reason. The field to-day is J as far from being proved or tried as it was i when first marked out, about two years ago, j nothing whatever having occurred to which to J ascribe the sudden fall in the value of scrip. [ It is true tho'Rolling Stone dredge has been ! working for a number of months, without publishing their returns, except oil one occasion— 9oz 7d\vt, From this it is inferred that no gold worth speaking of has been met with. ; Even if this were so, it only goes to prove that ' not the whole-of Cardrona Vailey is auriferous, j and the portion tried covers only about one-half of the width of the valley, and perhaps less. | There can be no doubt but that the Rolling j Stone dredge has done good work, and that ' the various dredgemasters in charge have used | the best of judgment ih directing the work, but j the site of operations has been singularly ill- ' chosen. In the first place, work was begun far too high up the valley'to strike the Branch : Creek run of gold, which besides in all likeli- ' hood proving profitable, would have reduced ' the width of tho valley to bo proved by one third, for the Cardrona run can only exist be- . tween the Branch Creek run and the Criffel Face bank of the Cardrona Valley, In •

i the second place the Branch Creek run, followed down, would inevitably have led on to | the Cardrona run. A good building site near the Branch Creek run was marked out for the company by a trustworthy and competent party, but it seems that other counsel prevailed, with the result we now see. However, so far as this Cardrona run is concerned nothing has been proved beyond the fact that not the whole valley is auriferous. The gold, when found, will be in a well-defined lead that can bo easily traced. What more than anything else has thrown a damper upon tho Cardrona is the report that the Rolling Stone dredge is to bo shifted to the Lady Cardrona claim, also belonging to tho Rolling Stone Company. The Lady Cardrona claim is in a comparatively narrow portion of the Valley, which can therefore be more readily prospected than the present site of the dredge. However, when everything has been j considered, nothing has been proved against tho ' Cardrona- being u. payable dredging field; in fact, tho evidence is rather the other way. An item that has, so far, not obtruded upon general observation is the fact that the Rolling Stone claim is "double banked"—that is, marked off on its lateral boundary, having a neighbour not only at its ends, but also atit3 side, limiting its prospecting operations across the Valley. The Rolling Stone dredge would thus, by continuing work, prospect the ground for the benefit of tho shepherding party. There ca-n'be 110 doubt that this fact, more than anything else, has induced tho Rolling Stone Company to suspend work for tho time being, for which they can scarcely be blamed. Tacon's Cardrona dredge, which is now about ready to start work, is also well situated for prospecting, and up to date is not "double banked." Borings have proved the existenco of gold at certain spots, and the dredge should have no difficulty in picking up the lead. The "double-banking" 'system is to be deprecated and regretted, {hough the parties to tho game can hardly be blamed for marking off alongside a claim that is about to prosnrot the ground for them. Shepherding o[ this kind is a mighty allurement that few can withstand. The pity of the present slump is that it will delay healthy progress, which, in so vast an area as the Cardrona, can hardly be slow under any circumstances. All tho old miners at the Cardrona, and there are yet a goodly number to the fore, are agreed that tho Cardrona will be a success in the dredging line, and to subscribe to this I have no hesitation. Owing chiefly to tho holidays, and partly to [ wet and broken weather, there is no mining news of particular interest.
