Several improvements in the laws relating to tlie preservation of game and native game were made during the last session; at least, the Legislature at-' tempted improvements, the nature of which time will show. It is now wholly illegal to export game or native gnme from New Zealand without the written consent of the Colonial Secretary , , and a penalty not exceeding £20 is attached to the offence. To get rid of the practice of killing; game in the winter and keeping it frozen, or to overcome the difficulty of proving that frozen game was killed out of season, it is now enacted that no game shall be held in possession for a greater period than seven days after the close of the game ■ season. By way of giving a real holiday to some of our fast-disappearing birds is is enacted that one year in every three shall be a year of grace for "native pigeon, piikeko, anrt kaka." The first of those years commences on Ist April, IP.OI. The value of this provision is probably very great at least in the case of pukeko. A recent visitor to Waihola has noticed the beneficial effect of the proclamation which htis reserved "Waihola and Waipori Lakes as a permanent refuge for waterfowl. These hirils are now becoming very numerous, as mauy as 500 swans having been seen together. The ducks have become tamer since they liavo learned that there is nothing to fear.
