HOOLIGANISM IN PORT CHALMERS

TO THE EDITOR. I Sir,—A few years ago such a thing was I unknown here, but I regret to say it is very | much in evidence of late, and appears to be on the increase, and so much so that at the present time almost every person you meet has complaints to make. I ain sorry to say that our police are not getting the assistance from the citizens that they should. Take, for instance, last Tuesday night: a trio of the Hooligans entered a hotel, took possession of a room, called for three, bottles of.beer and a bottle of whisky, and on being supplied called for glasses. When the waiter arrived they had decamped, and yet I regret to say the proprietor will not prosecute. Then take the case in the Police Court on Saturday last. Although it was proved that a shop had been burglariously entered and a quantity of hams stolen, yet the offenders get off with a fine and time given to pay it in. In any. other . town south of the line they would have been committed to a higher court. Again, take to-day's court. The aggressor or ringleader did not appear, treating the court with contempt. The {property of several peaceful, law-abiding citizens was wilfully torn down, and it will take several pounds to repair the damage. I could give many more instances, ; but have perhaps taken up sufficient of your 6pace.—l am, &c., ks Old Resident
