ENGINE DRIVERS' CERTIFICATES.

TO THE EDITOH.

R™'—Kindly grant me a. few lines of your space for a short notice of " Warpath's "' letter on the subject of engine drivers' certificates. I wish to point, out that tho regulations do not require workshop training as well af» engine dnving experience to qualify candidates for the first-class examination. Five years' apprenticeship is required for the extra first class, but this is purely an honorary distinction in no way compulsory. For all practical purposes, the act plaoes the engine driver who has driven an engine of over 200 in cylinder area for 12 months on an equality with the qualified mechanic who has served an apprenticeship, and perhaps has afirst class marine certificate. As most people know, a go.d dredge runs three shifts. Well, to complete the absurdity, each dredge is required to have three engine drivers, all holding the same class of certificate and presumably all equally in charge. Imagine how a steamer would get along with three chief engineers ! —I am, etc., X. Alexandra, December 20.
