MINING.

The Chalto Creek dredge is still working towards the Moutere side of tho claim, and will shortly be clear of tailings and get on to virgin ground. The diverting of the river has given, a little trouble. There was no washup last week.

The Secretary of the Ford's Creek Gold Dredging Company (Limited) reports having received the following -.vires from the dredgcmasfer:—"Working three shifts since Monday night; dredge working exceptionally we!!," and I'Depth, 10ft to 18ft; wash fair."

The Cromwell Argus states that Mr Charles Allan has been appointed master of the Metallic dredge. - Mr C. Curtis, of Stillwatcr, luia been appointed dredgemastcr of. the Grey River dredge, and has taken charge in that capacity.—Grey Rivor Argus.

According to the Nortli Otago Times, tho preliminary trial of the Maerewhcnua dredge has revealed the fact that there is rough pold as well as fine in the river bed of the Macrcwhenua River. This disposes of the belief that the gold would all bo fine, and much of it loat.

A general meeting of shareholders in the Roxburgh Jubilee Dredging Company will be held at the Dunedin Stock Exchange this evening.

Tenders are invited for the construction of machinery for a dredge for the Pile Up Gold Dredging Company.

Tenders are invited-for the purchase of the Klondyke dredge, now lying at Matakanui, and for a water race about two miles in length. At a meeting of shareholders in tho Miner's Lead Gold Dredging Company, held on tbo 17th inst., the resolution authorising the winding up of the company, passed at a previous meeting, was confirmed. Messrs T. S. Graham and St. J. Branigan were apnointed liquidators. The results of the boring "on this company's claim (situated on the North Beach, five miles from Westport) showed that out of 15 samples six contained sufficient gold for tho ground to become payable, but the other nine fell short, so that the general average was not sufficient to warrant the working of the claim. The secretary of the Leviathan Gold Dredging Company has received a wire from the dredgeumster.as follows:—" Smelted .-old, 490z lGdwt."

Tho Secretary of Hie Wakamarina Golden Point Gold Dredging Company reports that tho pontoons have been successfully launched.

The Secretary of the Ford's Creek DzeO.-;r.--Company reports having received the follow wire from the drcdge.master :—" Working thi.t shifts since Monday night. Dredge working exceptionally well. Depth 10ft to 18ft. Wash fair."

The secretary has received the following report from Messrs Cnlten Bros., the engineers for the Moa- Flat Gold Dredging Company: — " We have to report that th? work of erecting the machinery on your company's dredge is progressing well. Tho winches, engine, screen, and most of the main gear'are on board, and. the main and elevator ladders will soon be placed in position. The boiler, we regret, although almost completed, cannot be forwarded before the holidays, but will leave here a few days after work is resumed at the" New Year. The buckets nnd elevator trays should bo finished and sent awny in 10 days' from time of resuming work. These latter are lequired Jnst, and as every effort is being made to push the work on, wo think the dredge will be completed in the first or second week in February." The secretary of the Orwell Creek Gold Dredging Comnany has received the following report from Mr E. Roberts, the company's engineer:—"l bog to report that the following progress has been made by the "Dunedin Fovmdry and Engineering Company (Limited) with the machinery contract:—Ladder plates and angles punched and being put together, also all bulkheads; ladder rollers all cast, and spindles cut oft; Judder chairs, bearings, and lower tumbler bearings all cast; steel castings for lower tumbler in yard; channel steels for pivot shaft in yard; top tumble, cast and machined, and koyways cut; top tumbler spur wheel finished; fop tumbler shaft bearings' all fitted and bolted together, and sole plates Planed; friction wheel cast and machined; forgmps for friction nnd driver, also tlrivin" pins, finished; shaft for friction wheel cut off and bearings fitted; all other bearings fitted together; all shafting cut off, ready to turn y.p; union screws forged; ladder bunging gear iorgcd and machined; main ladder buckets nearly finished; main bucket cornier-tin.' links forged; bucket pins finished; pivot frame brackets cast; screen friction rollers finishedscreen plain rollers cast; screen bearings all fitted Together: fair leads nearly finished; boiler being made m Sydney, and well forward; .'nvoslls finished: friction race cast: grab-hooks forged; intake for centrifugal pump away to claim; forging?, nnd castings for air pump nearly finished; cross-bar and hanging-b»r tor ladder forged. LADY ROXBURGH GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir.,—l quito agree with tho suggestion of "Shareholder" in to-day's Times in regard to purchasing the New Alexandra dredge. It is about time something was done with our claim—either call lenders for a dredge or liquidate.' If tho claim is as good as it is reputed to be, then go ahead. This dillydallying month after month disgusts investors, and keeps them for investing in other ventures. Tho excuse has been that prices were too high, but this cannot apply now, as the foundries are slacking off.

Hoping that one of the directors will find, timo to explain the 23osition of the company through your columns, —I am, etc., ' Disgusted Shareholder.
