THE CANTERBURY JUBILEE

(Per United Press Association.)

CHRISTCrrURCH, December 20.

There was a fair attendance at the open-air service this afternoon to celebrate the inauguration of the work which will practically complete the cathedral. After processional hymn and a short service, Mr R. J. S. Harman laid the continuation stone of the southeast buttress of the apse. Hia Excellency tho Governor, in a brief speech, said the pioneerg of the settlement had acted rightly in raising this monument to Almighty God,- and emphasised the necessity of religion and of the Bible to the wellbeing of the State. Mr Harman, speaking as one of the early pilgrims, said he had enjoyed the privilege of having handed over to the Crown a sum of £10,000 for the patent of the Canterbury Bishopric. This expenditure had crippled the church for a time, but tho position had ultimately been recovered. Bishop Julius, after giving a resume of the work done in connection with the cathedral, said that since the work of completion had been taken in hand in earnest the sum of £9400 had been raised. He appealed earnestly for further assistance, and expressed his hope and conviction that the cathedral would be finished within two years. Tho collection amounted to £70.'

Christ's College has been celebrating its Jubilee this week. The annual dinner of the old boys was held at the Provincial Council Chambers, when 120 were present.
