KING STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.
At the King street Congregational Church laat evening a concert in aid o£ the organ fund wa3 held. Considerable interest was attached to the entertainment from the fact that the production of a cantata of somewhat more than average merit as a musical composition was the chief feature of the evening, and the seating accommodation was taxed to its limits. The first part of the programme was composed of vocal, instrumental, and elocutionary items, prominent amongst which were a finished rendering of "Echo," by Mr J. W. Nicholson; a solo, " Asleep on the deep," by Mr G. Dyer; and Scotson Clark's ' Inauguration March," for violin and organ, by Mr and Miss Moore. Miss Oliver sang " Good-bye, daddy"; Mr Hopkins, '" Anchored " ; Mr Mills recited '" The Death Bridge of the Tay" ; -and a mandolin and banjo duet by Messrs Hugging and Kerr concluded the first half of the programme. The cantata " Jonah," v?as rendered by the choir, augmented from various sources to the number of 40 voices, and assisted.by Mr Flint's orchestra. The. work is by. A. J. Jamouneau, and contains some vigorous choruses and pleasing solos, the rendering of which was, on the whole, highly creditable. The solo parts were sustained by Miss Palmer (soprano), Mr Gilbert (bass), and Mr Walker (tencr). Mr JO3. Abernethy wielded the baton. The orchestra had a large share of the work, which they performed most satisfactorily.
