GAMBLING AND MISSIONARIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Your correspondent " Jabberwock " will never learn, because he never reads properly. " Cvi Bono" did not say, "Do away with missionaries and you do away with most of the wars. ■ Therefore all " Jabberwoek's " jabber is waste ink and paper. The remark in reference to missionaries and war was qualified by the words, " Such as in China." I regret that Mr Thomas cannot see yet that the balloting for loans of the StarrBowkett Societies is what is called gambling. It is all very well to say you have security for your money, it is safe, and you will get it back. If a person puts money into a concern and he gets nothing for -it he loses, even if the principal is handed back some 20 years hence. It is perfectly clear that when a person draws one of these loans ho is richsr by the amount he can sell the loan for. I understand that as much as £30 is given for one of these £500 loans. It appears—according to Mr Thomas,—that this £30 comes out of the ballot box, and not from the other holders of shares. The person who buys only gives what it is worth; being a cheap loan he gives the premium to the drawer, who, I suppose, goes away wifti a smiling face. Gambling by any other name is just .as sweet.—l am, etc., Cvi Bono.
