AUCKLAND, July 27.

The directors of the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company have declared an interim dividend of 5 per cent, for the halfyear ended June 30.

Another raid has been made on Te Kuiti and Otorohanga residents suspected of sly grog-selling. Several half-castes and Natives are interested in-the charges.

The engine of the Itotorua train went off the line whilst taking the points at Huntly, and was delayed some time. , Captain Tilley, recently examiner of masters and mates at Auckland, and wellknbwn as commander of the first Melanesiari mission schooner, the Southern Cross, witb Bishop Patteson, died to-day. He was close on 70 years of age, and leaves a wife and family.

WELLINGTON, July.27.

A fire broke out this morning in Mr William Earnsha-w's brass foundry in Johnston street, and spread to the Wellesley Club adjoining. The brigade soon got it under control. The front part of Mr Earnshaw's premises is badly damaged, and three front rooms of the club suffered considerably from fire and water. Mr Earnshaw's machine room was uninsured. The insurances on the club building are —United Insurance Company £400, Phoenix £800; and on the contents —United £350, Phcenix £225. On Earnshaw's building the Standard have a policy for £300, and the contents were insured in the Alliance for £450.

The City Council have shelved the city engineer's street improvement scheme for six weeks. The scheme proposed the borrowing of £49,000 for the complete renovation of the footpaths and principal streets of the city and the construction of crossings wherever necessary. •

CHEISTCHURCH, July 27.

Lieutenant-colonel Gordon expects 2000 volunteers to take part in the Jubilee celebrations in Cliristchurch at the end of the year. Of these 1000 will" be mounted men. An endeavour will be made to obtain free railway conveyance for the men and horses.
