THE SHIP FOR THE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

The ship in which it is hoped that the members of the National Antarctic Expedition may reach the South Pole is being built at Dundee at the cost of £40,000. This vessel, which will be ready to sail in about a year's time, is being constructed on the lines of the Discovery, the ship in which i Admiral Sir Geo. Nares made his famous expedition to the Arctic region. . The officer who has been selected by the joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society is Lieutenant Robert F. Scott, one of the two officers offered by Mr Gosciicn. Lieutenant Scott, who has been in the navy 15 years, and who has a record of service of the highest class, is now torpedo-lieutenant of the Majestic. The head of the scientific staff will be Dr J. W. Gregory, who Was recently appointed professor of geology in the University of Melbourne. He has only just entered upon his duties at Melbourne, but the authorities have kindly granted him leave of absence. He will come to England in October.

The length of the absence of the expedition is mainly a question of funds,, but it is thought that it will be at least.two years in the Antarctic region.
