Captain Phillips, of the ship Agnes Oswald, which arrived al Brisbane recently, reports encountering a heavy gale on May 31 and the following day. ■ Tremendous seas rolled over the vessel,'tearing the boats from their fastenings nnd washing them into the sea. A quantity of other -deck fittings was also washed overboard, while the main topmast and maintop-gallant-mast carried away. All the doors of the' deckhouse were burst in, and everything from the galley was swept away. The cook, William Lawrence, was washed overboard, and was not seen again. It was impossible to do anything to save him. The s.s. Rimu,from Wellington, arrived (yesterday at 1 n.m., and was berthed at the Jetty street wharf.

The s.s. Corinna, from the West Coast, is due here to-day. The harbour waterman, 'Mr (i. Madigan, launched yesterday a splendid skiff 20ft long and sft beam, built by Mr H. Davis, boatbuilder. The boat, which is intended for use in the steamer basin, is built of kauri and copper fastened throughout, and is a creditable piece of work to the builder. The Swedish barque Hedrig, in ballast, from Mossell Bay. Cape of Good Hope, arrived off Otago Heads for orders yesterday forenoon. We believe sho has been chartered to load at Lyttnllon.

The barque Embleton, which was cut down in the Irish Channel on Saturday last by the Cunard liner Campania, war. an iron vessel of 1196 tons net, built at; SumlerUuid in 1881 by Messrs R. Thompson and Son. She was classed 100 Al at Lloyd's, and owned .by Messrs Iredale and Porter, of Liverpool.
