JAMES WAETRS.

CENTRAL PHARMACY,

The science of medicine, in which pharmaceutical chemistry is involved, is among the most important to mankind, for while geology, geometry, astronomy, and other sciences aid commerce and enlarge the scope of mental operations, medicine is the sworn ioe of man's greatest enemies—viz.. pain, disease, and .. death. Kven Shakespeare opined that philosophy was a poor comfort to toothache, and every man's experience must prove that the mind is ever a slave to the ills of the body. So that no art is higher than the healing art. and even the Pounder of Christendom is described as the Great Physician. Therefore the profession of the chemist and the dispenser of medicines is a highly important one, and necessitates the exercise "of experience, care, precision, and skill. These qualities are, as his mimsrtms customers will attest, possessed in no common measure-by the subject of this article, Mr James Waters, who has owned, and conducted the Central Pharmacy in Princes street for IS months past, The business is an old-established one. having been acquired-by Mr Watersf from Mr J. Reid. On purchasing the business Mr Waters had the Pharmacy thoroughly renovated, re-painted, rc-fiited, and ' newly stocked with a large and up-to-date selection of druggists' goods, toilet requisites, ciniggists' sundries, perfumery, -and chemists' fancy goods. The premises have a handsome frontage, covering .111 extent of 20ft to Princes street,'-and fin3,large plateglass windows display a variefy of general druggists' and fancy goods, which cannot fail to attract the attention of the passerby. The interim- of the shop is ha.lldson.lely fitted and furnished, elegant bent-glass showcases giving a tastefully-arranged display of the many articles with which Mr Waters', who-is in touch with all the latest, pharmaceutical developments, supplies the public. The revolving mirror of fashion is also studied in the toilet requisites, perfumery ,'md. fancy goods department, which Mr Waters, by constant importations, is careful to keep up-to-date. Some very excellent remedies, which are rapidly and deservedly gaining popularity and,' fame, -are put; up on the premises. Among ihfse are 'the Canadian Cough Cure, a Nerve mid Brain Tonic (phosphated). Compound Extract, of Sarsaparilla, and other preparations. Mr Waters imports all his goods in hulk from England and America, 'and ho transacts a large dispensing business. For this purpose he has a commodious and well-fitted dispensary at the reav of the shop, the whole nt tho . premises having a depth of about 40ft. A' qualified chemist is always on the premises at ni.zht in order to dispense urgent; prescriptions, and as he, is ever within hearing of the nightrbell and telephone the. convenience of customers is served with readiness and despatch. Mv WiUors has had a varied experience of his profession, extending over a period of upward? of 12 years. A native of Kpw.Zealand, he was apprenticed, on the completion of a sound and thorough education, to Mr. Henderson, chemist "of Auckland, with whom he remained for about nine years, gaining an intimate acquaintance both with Ilor.la.n--pnthy and allopathy, qualifying as" a chemist, under tho Pharmacy Board of New Zealand in the year 1396." He afterwards held the responsible post of manaeer for Mr P. J. Haskett, of Auckland,"for a period of about three years, and 18 months ago, as already related, he purchased the business of Mr ,T. Reid, of Princes street, Thmedin. Bis close attention to business has not afforded Mr Waters an opportunity of entering into public matters lint he takes a keen" .interest in

ail athletic pursuits, 'and is a liberal patron of sport. As a young and rising citizen of excellent business qualities. Mr Waters has gained increasing patronage for his business and respect for himself durmg f his residence in Dunedin.
