FRANK HYAMS.

JEWELLER," WATCHMAKER, &c.

T!ie strict canons of political economy exclude from the domain of productive labour all the creations of art which serve to ornament and beautify. But without Art, which has no existence in political economy, human life would be a dull, dreary routine, in no manner different from tlia sleepy careers of the animals of the field. The objects served" by the jeweller and -watchmaker are at once practical and ornamental, and to him much is due of the beautifying and refining surroundings which adorn' the homes of the civilised and the cultured. The most representative business in this line in Dunedm is that of Mr Prank Hyams. the -main premises of which are. situated in Princes street.. Mr Hyams. the proprietor, purchased the business in 1885 from the previous owners, and he had the premises rebuilt, with a handsome and commanding frontage of Oamaru stone, occupying. about 25ft of the main thoroughfare. The build'me, which for the remaining part is of brick, has a depth of about 30. U. The plate glass windows in Princes sheet present a \--;vy ornate display of high-class jewellery, 'silverware. &c.,' and particular attention is attracted to the mountings in Mew Zealand i-reenstone, "which sets off the gold admirably. The interior of the premises are also very inviting to the lover of the beautiful," for in handsome glass show-cases there is a brilliant display of nil the dainty and fanciful articles which it is a jeweller's pride to manufacture. The feature in all the goods exhibited which impresses itself upon the observation of the visitor is the high class and rave <|uality of the materials and the fineness and skill of the workmanship. Particular attention is attracted to the highclass diamond and gem jewellery, v.-ii'ieh as set and mounted by the firm reflects great credit upon the management. The rings, brooches, bangles, &c., sparkle with the brilliance of these gems, from .which myriad reflections shoot off at the touch of the sunlight. A feature which commands special prominence lies in the fact that Jh- Hyams lias all his own mounting executed on the spot, f.herebv saving the customs duty, which, heavily penalises the finished article imported from other countries. The management import thi\ loose stones in large quantities, execute the mounting themselves, and by the saving thus made are enabled'to place the cuoc!n before their customers at :i much lower ligur« than would otherwise be 750sslbk-. A .-special u-.-yinrtment is also ~d«----votyii to china .varo,' Doultou .ware, Japtneytt'novrslties, and the very choicest samples of i:ho ceramic art..
