SCHOOL VACATIONS

UNION STREET SCHOOL,

The broaking-up of the Union street School took place yesterday afternoon. At 2.30 the children assembled in the gymnasium, and there was a good attendance of their parents avid friends. Mr P. Aitkeh (chairman of the committee) presided, and there were also on tie platform Messrs G. Israel, G. Me'ury, G. Laurence (members of the committee), the Rev. Messrs North and Heighway. Apologies \vere received from i Messrs Meggett, Ireland, Bull (members of committee), Cohen, f O. Wright, and the Rev. W. Hewitson. A short programme was gone 'through by the pupils, comprising; principally part- songs and choruses. These wore received with warm applause, especially . " Soldiers of the Queen " and another part song. A recitation vras also delivered by Miss Hilda Hulston in an extremely creditable manner. Tho Chairman, during an interval in the programme, addressed those present. He Etated. that in looking up tha records of the school he found that the results of the year were highly satisfactory, the percentage of passes being even better than last year. The school grounds and gardens were in excellent order, and reflected great credit en the janitor, Mr Little.—(Applause.) The interim' of the school building, however, required immediate attention. The committee had be-on urging on the Education Board the necessity of this work, and as a result of their efforts ho believed that before the school re-opened some very urgent work would have- been completed. In the teaching staff change had been the order for the last three months. 'Mr Mathews had been promoted to the Shag Point. School. Mv Reid, who ?q ably filled the position of third assistant, waS selected to fill the vnca-ncy. Now they had to select another teacher to fill the position of third assistant. There was another change yet, Mr Line^ having applied for, and received, 12 months' leave of absence,-Mr Jones, relieving teacher, took his place. ' By the promotion of Mr Mathews the school lost a popular teacher —(applause)—who had gainod the confidence of the children, the respect of parents, and the approbation of the headmaster.— (Applause.) Still, with all this change, they had the consolation of knowing they had still Mr Stewart,- who so worthily "filled the position of headmaster.—(Loud applause.) He ventured to say that the large attendance at the Bible class—the speaker thought it was the largest in town-r-was in a prcat measure due to the excellent example and influence of Mr S tewart. —(Applause.) The presentation of the prizes and certificates was then proceeded wilh. They were distributed by Mv Fleilry, the Rev. MrHeighway, the Rev. Mr North.,and Mr A. \Vright, each of whom mada a few, appropriate remarks. Mr Wright.;as an old " Stone school" boy, presented the old hoys'' prize to the dux.
