Sullivan pleaded guilty to executing transfer notes purporting to transfer two lots of 25 shares in the Halfway House Dredging Company without the name of the purchaser having.been written in ink at the time.—Mr Fraser . appeared for the department, and said the prosecution, as his "Worship was aware, was under section 133 of the Stamp Act. In this case he proposed to call a witness.to enable his Worship to arrive at a conclusion whether it was a first hand transaction from buyer to sellers. On-this point it'was; possible Mr Sullivan might not know janything.' He would like to say further,, as showing the importance of the prosecutions, that since the matter haci been made public the revenue of the department had increased by about £200 per week.—James Newbury Lawson gave evidence that ho was the selling broker in regard to these shares. He was in a position to say that theae shares were sold direct to Messrs Meek and Dawsbn, of Oamaru. As a matter of fact,'the revenue received double in this case'-'-a'a the. seller held SO shares, and they were purchased in two lots of 25.—His "Worship asked Mr .Fraser if he wished to press both cases.—Mr Fraser replied in the affirmative.—His "Worship ..said that' under the circumstances he, would, have been quite prepared to allow him' to" withdraw one case.—Mr, Fraser said that he would be happy to make any recommendation in .regard to the cases, but his. instruction's were' to proceed with both.—The minimum penalty of £20 and costs was then inflicted -in each case.-; — Similar charges against Joseph Lanham Flint (bank manager, Alexandra), . and James Theyer (miner, Alexandra),' and James Foohey (miner, Alexandra) were adjourned until the 19th inst. on the application of Mr Sinclair, who appeared for all the parties. A Fencing Dispute.—This was an appeal from his Worship's decision under the Fencing Act, where two parties failed to agree as to the kind' of fence to be erebted between their adjoining properties.—lsabella Somerville (represented by Mr Kiddell) was the plaintiff, and John Edward Morrell, who appeared in person, was the , defendant. The parties: were neighbours at Forbury.—-After hearing, the dispute his Worship" ordered the fence to be erected by the defendant within a fortnight, according to the specification with slight modifications of "MrWilkinson '(the tenderer)/and the /■-st was to bo £2 15.3 per chain. ■■
