PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED. " Chambers's Journal" (W. and R. Cham, bers, Limited, London and Edinburgh).—The July number opens with a South Sea Story, •'The Tapu of Bandcrah." The paper ou " Bacteria in Harness " shows how they are the scavengers of the earth. Captain Herford give; a stirring account of " The Fall of Sebaslopol," and Mr Hogan, M.P., discusses Lord Rosebcry as a literary critic. The question of gambling on great ocean steamers is dealt with, and Mr Grimshaw describes some " Parasites and their Peculiarities." The notes of the. mouth on science and art are interesting, as is usually the caEe, and there are several articles on various topics which will repay perusal. NEW MUSIC. We-have received from the composer, Mr Leo Carri the "Palm March," dedicated to tht daughter of Bishop Julius.' It is written in the key of B flat, and presents no great difficulties to the player. The composer offers a prize of one guinea to the best player of the march. The public will probably have an early opportunity of judging of its merits, as Signor Squariso is now engaged in writing the band parts of the march, which will later on be performed in public by one of the city bands. Wo have to acknowledge the receipt of a new song, "The Song of Football," composed by Mr George Garry, the words being by Mr E. M. Dell, both of New Plymouth. The melody is fairly simple, and the chorus, in waltz time, goes with a good swing. With these points in its favour, the new song should prove' popular with football players, and probably on the occasion of the visit of the Taranaki team it may be sung in public.

HOW TO PREVENT PNEUMONIA. In a recent letter from Washington, D.C., to an old friend, Major G. A. Studev, for 20 years United States Consul at Singapore, says: " Whilst at Dcs Moines I became acquainted with a liniment known as Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which I found excellent against rheumatism, as well as against soreness of the throat and chest (giving me much easier breathing). I had a touch of pneumonia early this week, and two applications freely applied to the throat and chest relieved me of it at once. I would not be without it for anything.".
